Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Location: 600 N. Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21287

    Shift:

    Full Time (40 hours)

    Day Shift; 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

    Position Summary:

    • The Cytotechnologist, under the general supervision of the Cytopathology Supervisor of Technical Operations, microscopically examines human cellular samples from various body sites in accordance with departmental procedures and policies; considering clinical history of the patient, marks pertinent findings; makes final cytologic interpretation for gynecologic cell samples which are within normal limits; makes the preliminary cytologic interpretation for non-gynecologic samples and abnormal gynecologic samples; performs quality control checks; teaches cytopathologic modalities to cytotechnology students, residents, fellows, visitors; assists in various research projects; performs other related duties.

    Education:

    • A bachelors degree and must have graduated from an approved cytotechnology program as outlined in CLIA >88 (Fed. Register Friday, Feb. 28, 1992 Vol. 57 No. 40).
    • Course work in molecular modalities is highly desirable.

    Required Licensure, Certification, On-going Training:

    • Must qualify as a Cytotechnologist under CLIA 88
    • Must successfully pass the ASCP Proficiency test in Cytology within six months of hire.
    • ASCP certification required (or other Department approved agency certification/ASCP equivalent)

    Work Experience:

    • Prefer 2 years of cytotechnology experience screening gynecological and non-gynecological specimens including fine needle aspirations.
