Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Job Description:

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Microscopically examines stained slides prepared from cellular materials in order to detect cancer, other cellular abnormalities and infections.
    • Under established cytopathologic criteria, formulates a diagnostic report according to material observed on slides examined.Refers abnormal/questionable findings to Supervisor and/or Cytopathologist for further study and final diagnosis.
    • Refers all non-gynecologic samples and certain gynecological samples to Cytopathologist after screening for final diagnosis.
    • Participates in all the quality control and quality assurance procedures, including the 10% rescreening program and submitting personal screening data generated from other institutions.
    • In the absence of the Cytopreparatory Technician, and on a rotating basis, may be required to assume cytopreparatory duties (preparation of body fluids, staining of slides, cover-slipping, labeling accessioning, etc.).
    • If assigned to the cytopreparatory area, assumes responsibility for decontamination/disposal of containers, and all other prep related policies and procedures.
    • Performs routine maintenance and service duties to insure cleanliness of the work area.
    • Assists in the performance of fine needle aspirates on request.
    • Participates in educational opportunities as available.

    Education/Experience Required:

    • B.A. or above
    • Ability to read and write at a college graduate level
    • College experience includes basics in the natural sciences, anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, physics, statistical analysis and mathematics
    • Working knowledge of database use, spreadsheets and word processing software
    • Ability to understand scientific papers and common research methods in the field of pathology

     Registration/Certification:

    • CT(ASCP) or SCT(ASCP) certification
    • There are rare cytotechnologists in the field who grandfathered into CT certification without a bachelor’s degree. They are eligible to hire, but a cytotechnologist with a degree is greatly preferred.
