Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Opus Pathology is currently seeking a third full-time Cytotechnologist to add to our team. This position will primarily be screening non-gynecologic specimens and gynecologic pap smears.
Skills Required:
-Screen and evaluate any gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens sent to laboratory
-Correlates microscopic findings with patient information in order to arrive at an accurate diagnostic interpretation.
-Makes certain that the most diagnostic areas are indicated by dots or circles on all slides submitted for review.
-Checks slides and worksheets for clerical accuracy referring any errors to data entry for correction.
-Accurately enters required data on screening log sheets on a daily basis and forwards completed logs to the Technical Supervisor at the end of the month.
-Adheres to the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as set forth in the CLIA ’88 Federal Rules and Regulations for Cytology, the Cytology Department Procedure Manual related to the scope of Cytotechnologists’ responsibilities, and the Cytology Department Quality Improvement Manual.
-Keeps abreast of trends in diagnostic cytology and makes every effort to rapidly assimilate new and changing diagnostic criteria.
-Keeps all required licenses current and participates in continuing medical education programs, seminars, or meetings.
Education Requirements
ASCP Cytotechnology Board of Registry Certificate, or eligible
BS from an accredited school of Cytotechnology, or equivalent education acceptable to accrediting agency.
