    Position Summary

    Assumes duties as delegated by the Laboratory Director under CLIA regulations. Performs duties of cytotechnologist, performing cytopathologic procedures leading to diagnosis of benign and malignant conditions and a full range of quantitative and qualitative cytologic tests on variety of samples for presence or absence of disease or cellular abnormalities. Also assumes other administrative duties and responsibilities, as delegated by director or supervisor, such as: statistical report maintenance, proficiency survey activities, lab accreditation inspection preparations, Quality Assurance and Quality Control maintenance and reporting activities. Also acts as technical resource for staff, assisting in training, test troubleshooting and competency assessments. Also works with pathologists on special projects. Ensures efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations enabling ability of the laboratory to meet the needs of patients as determined by the medical staff.

    Key Responsibilities include:

    • Assumes responsibility for important and required laboratory processes and procedures, such as but not limited to: proficiency testing, quality assurance monitoring and quality control activities. Helps prepare the laboratory for validation and accreditation inspections, developing new procedures special projects and computer applications. Also assists and conducts staff training and competency assessments.
    • Performs cytodiagnosis of benign and malignant conditions with pathologist.
    • Classifies slides, records classification, and presents slides with abnormal cell structures to pathologist for further examination.
    • Stains and mounts slides and examines human body cells to detect evidence of cancer or other diseased conditions.
    • Compiles listing of patients for follow up analysis of specimens; prepares and analyzes the new specimens for cell changes and reports findings to pathologist.
    • Prepares written cytopathologic diagnostic reports using recognized terminology, and makes recommendations for further evaluation or treatment.
    • Maintains cytotechnologist's screening workload statistics and other related data as required by regulatory agencies and laboratory manager.
    • Develops, maintains and participates in staff educational programs. Provides technical instruction to other departments. Maintains laboratory procedures and policies.
    • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification/licensure, and/or keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
    • Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
    • Identifies need for and acquires a variety of related material for addition to the teaching collection.
    • Performs detailed accuracy analysis of department projects on a semi-annual basis.
    • Develops, recommends and coordinates implementation of new procedures.
    • Interfaces closely with personnel in other departments on a frequent basis.
    • Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
    • Participates in research.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

    Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

    Minimum Education:

    • Bachelor’s Degree

    Minimum Experience:

    • 3-5 years in a cytology lab as a certified Cytotechnologist. Proven interpretive and laboratory skills.

    Required Certification/Licensure/Training:

    • Graduate of ASCP approved cytotechnologist school
    • CT(ASCP) and current California DHS Cytotechnologist License
