Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Position Summary
Assumes duties as delegated by the Laboratory Director under CLIA regulations. Performs duties of cytotechnologist, performing cytopathologic procedures leading to diagnosis of benign and malignant conditions and a full range of quantitative and qualitative cytologic tests on variety of samples for presence or absence of disease or cellular abnormalities. Also assumes other administrative duties and responsibilities, as delegated by director or supervisor, such as: statistical report maintenance, proficiency survey activities, lab accreditation inspection preparations, Quality Assurance and Quality Control maintenance and reporting activities. Also acts as technical resource for staff, assisting in training, test troubleshooting and competency assessments. Also works with pathologists on special projects. Ensures efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations enabling ability of the laboratory to meet the needs of patients as determined by the medical staff.
