  • SUMMARY: Operates equipment and performs construction tasks with heavy equipment and hand tools associated with forestry, remediation, construction and natural resource management under the Natural Resources Department. Maintains and manages vehicles & equipment within the department.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    Ø Works collaboratively as a team member.

    Ø Operate heavy equipment, excavator, dump truck, tractor, trucks, etc., primarily for maintenance of forest roads, restoration areas, drainages.

    Ø Properly follow policies and procedures and OSHA safety procedures. Bring problems, issues, or concerns to supervisor.

    Ø Perform manual labor as required in maintenance of equipment or facilities.

    Ø Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and SBDNR vehicles, and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor, clean equipment, and vehicles.

    Ø Perform basic equipment maintenance hand and power tools.

    Ø Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment.

    Ø Collaborate with team members to accomplish project goals in a timely manner.

    Ø Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.

    Ø Strong mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills.

    Ø Ability to read and interpret project plans and specifications.

    Ø Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.

    Other Duties:

    Ø Perform slash treatment/ piling.

    Ø Road construction and maintenance

    Ø Perform brush clearing.

    Ø Assist in tree planting inspections.

    Ø Assist in pre-commercial thinning inspections.

    Ø Assist in regeneration and stocking surveys.

    Ø May be asked to train/ perform fire suppression actions, operating heavy equipment for fire suppression, fuels reduction and fire prevention. Maintain and monitor burn areas on Tribal lands.

    Ø Complete accurate reports in a timely manner with attention to detail.

    Ø Communicates with both internal and external customers including operators, landowners, state, county and federal partners working for the Tribe.

    Ø Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of service, workforce diversity, equity and inclusion, team environment, and strong internal communication and alignment.

    Ø Other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles. Ability to drive and operate equipment under varying working conditions. 3-6 years' experience operating heavy equipment required. Working knowledge in road construction/maintenance required and general construction/maintenance preferred. Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations. Must have knowledge of mechanical maintenance of heavy equipment, possess ability to diagnose/ repair maintenance issues in field. Ability to work independently and in a team like setting. Basic computer knowledge required. Good customer service skills required. High School Diploma or GED and valid Class A CDL with Tanker/ Airbrake Endorsement required. AA/AS preferred but not required.

    Vocational / trade school for heavy equipment operators certification preferred but not required. Safe driving record required.

    Ø Possession of a valid driver’s license that is recognized in Washington State and an acceptable driving record.

    Ø Experience and proficiency with Adobe and Microsoft Office software (outlook, excel, word).

    Ø Ability to use GPS, read maps and navigate from maps.

    Ø Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

    Ø Tanker, double trailer – Endorsement (must be obtained within 6 months of hire).

    Ø Experience operating –

    o Tools and Equipment: Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, and/or powered motors, automotive equipment, and trailers.

    o Engines, excavators, hand tools, chainsaws, and water handling equipment.

    EXTERNAL VISIBILITY/CONTACT: High frequency of contact and visibility with the public. Moderate contact with key personnel in purchase of parts and supplies. Moderate contact with key Tribal personnel, government officials and presentations and attendance at public meetings.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Basic mathematical skills; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions.

    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, and lift 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project sites.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    High frequency of exposure to adverse weather conditions such as extreme cold, rain, snow, and ice. High frequency exposure to hazardous weather and working conditions such as working in deep ditches, steep slopes, mud, working in confined spaces and use of hazardous paints and solvents. Work includes heavy physical effort in lifting or moving equipment and in working in awkward positions with tools or equipment.

    Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.

    INDIAN PREFERENCE: Indian preference will be exercised in the hiring of this position in accordance with Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe’s policy 181 within the Tribes Employee Handbook.
