  • Duties

    As the Dairy Scientist in this position, you will:

    • Perform routine analyses of milk and fluid milk products for fat, protein, solids, lactose, milk urea nitrogen, freezing point depression, and somatic cell counts in the laboratory.
    • Use analytical wet chemistry, ether extraction, Kjeldahl analysis, enzymatic assays, direct microscopic counts, flow cytometry, and infrared spectroscopy methods to determine milk content.
    • Analyze data using spreadsheet and graphical analysis to produce test reports.
    • Perform routine laboratory tasks necessary for the preparation and shipment of control milk standards used for checking the accuracy of infrared milk analyzers.
    • Visit farms, dairy plants, milk hauler facilities and stores to obtain supplies of milk and milk samples.
    • Interact with dairy industry representatives to coordinate dairy testing.
    • Conduct routine on-site evaluations of test procedures used at dairy industry laboratories and prepare reports based on results and observations.
    • Participate in the quality management system.
    • Maintain dairy lab equipment and an orderly, safe laboratory environment.
    NOTE: This position falls under pay bands MA 10-17. Selectee's pay will be set between the MA 12-13 pay bands based on years of education and/or experience.

    • Safely work in a laboratory environment and milk house on slippery floors with varying temperatures, noise levels, and smells.

    Qualifications

    In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

    Basic Requirement: Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in a physical or life science with at least 15 semester hours in chemistry, microbiology, or dairy and food related sciences AND at least 6 semester hours of mathematics or physics.

    Have the appropriate semester hours described above for the position and experience that, when combined with education, would equal a 4-year course of study. The experience has equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform at the grade level to which appointed.

    Professional Experience Qualification Requirements: The basic requirement above will qualify applicants at the MA-12 paybands.
    In addition to the above-stated basic requirement, in order to qualify at the MA-13 payband and above, applicants must have six months of professional experience for the MA-13 in a field directly related to the position to be filled. This experience demonstrates performing technical work in one of the physical sciences, or in a closely related field, such as experience as a laboratory technician when the work was performed in close association with a chemist or other physical scientist and provided me with an intensive knowledge of scientific principles, methods, and techniques. The guidelines used to perform the work may have required some deviation or adaptation to specific circumstances and I was required to use some judgment in their application.

    Have half a year (9 semester hours) of full-time graduate education in a field directly related to the position to be filled.

    Part-time or unpaid experience: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    Volunteer or unpaid experience: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
