  • Hastings Mutual is currently looking for a Claim Data Scientist to join our Claim division! This is a great opportunity for an experienced professional who will be instrumental in developing data-driven solutions that support our business objectives.

    Position Location & Work Format

    This position is flexible in its location! Candidates residing within the greater Hastings, Michigan, will be able to work a hybrid (combination of on-site and work-from-home) schedule as an alternative. Preference will also be given to candidates who reside within our six-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Illinois). Hastings Mutual may consider candidates in other states to work remotely if elements of their application are strong.

    Generally, this role will work within our standard office hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

    Position Duties & Responsibilities

    • Provides business decision support while also providing data stewardship of internal and external data sources.
    • Works with the business unit’s leadership team to identify and prioritize data and information needs, devises data-based solutions used to monitor the area’s operational and management processes, and provides data support for information-based improvements and strategy.
    • Consults with the Chief Underwriting Officer, underwriting leadership, ETL Developers, Data Analysts, Modelers, and Business Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to obtain insights and understanding about the insurance industry and uses that understanding in the support and provision of business data solutions.
    • Assists in the development of required documentation associated with the development and maintenance of solutions satisfying all company, IT, and Data Governance policies, procedures, standards, practices, and guidelines.
    • Participates in the collaboration between analysts, developers, system owners, quality assurance, business process owners, and data governance in the testing of new and changed data elements, structures, reports, and services.
    • Participates in identifying additional technologies and methodologies that might have a potential impact on company information processes.
    • Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
    • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.

    Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business, Economics, or related field or equivalent work experience with emphasis on research and data analysis.
      • Advanced degree in Data Analytics or Information Technology is preferred.
    • Five to ten years in a data science or data analysis position performing data wrangling, data modeling, BI analysis, and data visualizations demonstrating an understanding of computer systems, programming, and/or the use of statistical applications.
    • A working understanding of business processes and related financial and operational measures.
    • Problem solving ability to think outside the box.
    • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, follow directions, and use good judgment in an environment that can be ambiguous and time sensitive.
