Data Scientist identifies trends, patterns, and anomalies found in big data sets by performing extensive data analysis to develop insights. Performs data mining, cleaning, and aggregation processes to prepare data, implement data models, conduct analysis, and develop databases. Being a Data Scientist interprets results from multiple structured and unstructured data sources using programming, statistical, and analytical techniques and tools. Collaborates with teams to understand each data analysis projects' underlying purpose, focus, and objectives. Additionally, Data Scientist designs, develops, and implements the most valuable data-driven solutions for the organization. May require a master's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Data Scientist work is closely managed. Partners with clients and subject matter experts across the organization to determine how data may be collected, analyzed, and used to drive inform organizational decisions and drive critical business processes and outcomes. Develops innovative and effective approaches to solve client's analytics problems. Applies advanced statistical and predictive modeling techniques to build, maintain and improve upon real-time decision systems.
• Business Requirements: Leads discovery process with stakeholders to identify business requirements and expected outcome; suggests other solutions of interest to the client; models and frames business scenarios that are meaningful and have impact on critical business processes and decisions
• Data Requirements: Identifies what data is available and relevant, including internal and external data sources; leverages new data collection processes and geo-spatial and social media data; collaborates with subject matter experts to select relevant sources of information; makes strategic recommendations on data collection, integration, and retention, incorporating business requirements and knowledge of best practices
• Analysis: Develops innovative and effective approaches to solve client's analytics problems and communicates results and methodologies; works in iterative processes with the client and validates findings; develops experimental design approaches to validate findings and test hypotheses; validates analyses using scenario modeling; identifies/creates appropriate algorithms to discover patterns
• Data Product Management: develop relevant metrics, funnel models, and scoring/propensity models to guide decision-making. Build data products that address specific needs such as donor pipeline management and campaign performance dashboards. Integrate data into existing workflows and dashboards to enhance accessibility and utilization.
• Communications: Presents and depicts the rationale of findings in understandable terms for the business; presents back results that contradict common belief, if needed; communicates and works with business subject matter experts
• Change Advocacy: Educates the organization on new approaches, such as testing hypotheses and statistical validation of results; helps the organization understand the principles and details behind various processes to drive organizational buy-in
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in math, statistics, computer science, or related field required. Advanced degree preferred. 7 years’ experience in data science and analytics required. Experience with large consumer datasets and higher education advancement preferred.
*Position allows for telecommuting/work from home 3-4 days per week depending upon business need and leader approval. Our office is located in Iowa City, IA.
