Data Scientist identifies trends, patterns, and anomalies found in big data sets by performing extensive data analysis to develop insights. Performs data mining, cleaning, and aggregation processes to prepare data, implement data models, conduct analysis, and develop databases. Being a Data Scientist interprets results from multiple structured and unstructured data sources using programming, statistical, and analytical techniques and tools. Collaborates with teams to understand each data analysis projects' underlying purpose, focus, and objectives. Additionally, Data Scientist designs, develops, and implements the most valuable data-driven solutions for the organization. May require a master's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Data Scientist work is closely managed.     Data Science and Analytics plays a key role in the Core Data and Analytics (CDA) organization. We bring to bear data to provide key insights, business intelligence and data science products that advance NM's strategic priorities.

    Role and Responsibilities :

    As a Lead Data Scientist, you will be a part of the Claims team that delivers artificial intelligence models and insights to build efficiencies and straight through processing for our claims business partners. Our successful candidate will be applying and integrate advanced statistical, mathematical, data mining, predictive modeling, and business analysis to discover and identify new insights. You will advance the work by helping to turn those insights into actionable outcomes. Through team exposure and interaction with business clients, you will be able to influence others by telling a story through data. Be prepared to visualize recommendations for forecasts, metrics, and sophisticated data sets. You will share best practices with peers through coaching and mentoring around core methodologies, patterns, standards and processes.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
    • Applies and integrates advanced statistical, mathematical, data mining, predictive modeling and business analysis skills and techniques to discover and identify new insights, predict and prescribe outcomes, advise on turning new insights into actionable opportunities and outcomes, and provide the tracking and measurement of results.
    • Develop solutions, mathematical models, algorithms, machine learning techniques, and robust analytics to support analytic insights and visualization of complex data sets for productization and monetization. Models need constant refitting as data changes over time.
    • Identifies available internal and external data resources to develop and deliver information solutions, including analytical information.
    • Applies creative problem solving and inter-departmental networking to address data and information needs across the enterprise.
    • Drive innovation by exploring new experimentation methods and statistical techniques that could sharpen or speed up our product decision-making processes
    • Through extensive analysis, this individual will discover technology improvement opportunities and will work with other teams to address these opportunities.
    • Direct supervision of up to 4 employees
    • Generative Artificial Intelligence model building and unstructured data manipulation
    Qualifications :
    • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Econometrics or related field.
    • 7 years progressively responsible experience with a proven track record of demonstrating analytics to drive significant business impact or to develop data/algorithm-based products Extensive experience working with data and developing, crafting and presenting analytics, including some programming experience and work with multiple data bases.
    • Expertise in one or more development or sophisticated analytical tools such as R, SAS, Python, Tableau Relational, and/or columnar data experience required. Expert level knowledge of advanced analytical model development and construction Proven track record to question assumptions, demonstrate relational analysis and integration of all components needed to solve problems, understand the scope and limitations of field data and communicate in writing and verbally the meaning, trends and issues of applying data for decision making.
    • Proven track record to build rapport, negotiate, gain the confidence and work successfully with home office leaders in a variety of areas across the company.
    • Proven track record to lead decision making process through idea sharing and consensus building.
    • Proven track record to frame-out rough ideas and transform them into data that illustrates outcomes. Must have ability to exercise judgment and discretion when presenting and explaining recommendations to field and home office leaders.
    • Develop and deploy testing hypotheses and analyze test results, to ensure data quality, consistency, repeatability, and accuracy of insights Ability to tell business story with data.
    • Proficiency in cloud environments like Azure, AWS, or GCP including model deployment preferred
    • Passion for problem solving, research, quantitative analysis, and analytical working techniques
    • Extremely organized with high attention to details
    • Excellent time and project management skills, with the ability to manage detail work and communicate project status effectively to all levels
    • Consistent track record in meeting aggressive deadlines

    Compensation Range:

    Pay Range - Start:

    $121,030.00

    Pay Range - End:

    $224,770.00

    Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.
