Database Engineer plans, designs, develops, and manages an organization's databases to ensure efficient data storage, access, and security. Collaborates with users to design, code, test, debug, and deploy databases that meet requirements and organizational needs. Being a Database Engineer writes queries, stored procedures and functions for database development. Monitors databases' performance, scalability, and security and modifies procedures to optimize database designs. Additionally, Database Engineer evaluates existing database design to determine necessary updates, performance tuning, and integration requirements. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of database technologies and solid coding and computer system skills. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Database Engineer work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Database Engineer typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.     Senior contributor that is fully proficient in applying established standards; knowledge base acquired from several years of experience in the area of Database Engineering
    Supervises, constructs, and coaches team of database engineers
    Leads projects in design, development, implementation and management of databases
    Develops database architectures to address business requirements, ensuring system scalability, security, performance and reliability
    Constructs data decomposition diagrams, provides data flow diagrams and documents the process
    Designs database applications such as interfaces, data transfer mechanisms and data partitions to enable efficient access of the generic database structure.
    Creates plans for architecture updates and integrates new systems with existing warehouse structure to refine performance/functionality
    Leverages in-depth knowledge and expertise of database technologies, along with solid programming, design and system analysis skills
    Partners with Software Architects and Software Developers on data access methods and decisions on optimal data structures for persistence
    Overall responsibility for all production database environments
    Audits database environments to ensure appropriate use and compatibility with County standards
    Assesses data extraction, report generation, and bugs appearing in operations involving the data warehouse
    Performs other related technology duties and projects as assigned
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a relevant degree, 5-7 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Expert knowledge with stored procedures, data batch processing, and data as a service; expert knowledge with SQL and SSRS (SQL Server 2008-2016)
    • Skill in Agile Methodology; skill in managing data operations for data at rest, data exchange, batch processing, and data reporting
    • Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner across functional and technical departments, both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, stakeholders, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside organizations and agencies, vendors and the general public
    • Demonstrates technological intuitiveness
    • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
    • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
    • Must have available transportation during entire workday
    • Required to travel to remote sites within Bexar County
    • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance
    • Required to be on call 24 hours
    • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
    • May be required to work weekends
    Preferred Certification/License:
    • CompTIA Security SQL Database, MCDBA, GSEC, GCIH, GCIA, CISSP, or other equivalent certifications
    Working Environment and Physical Demands:
    • Constantly working in indoor conditions
    • Frequently moves items weighing up to 10-15 pounds
    • Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Occasionally moves about the office
    • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
    • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
    • Positions self to perform essential functions
    • Must be able to remain in a stationary position
