Database Engineer plans, designs, develops, and manages an organization's databases to ensure efficient data storage, access, and security. Collaborates with users to design, code, test, debug, and deploy databases that meet requirements and organizational needs. Being a Database Engineer writes queries, stored procedures and functions for database development. Monitors databases' performance, scalability, and security and modifies procedures to optimize database designs. Additionally, Database Engineer evaluates existing database design to determine necessary updates, performance tuning, and integration requirements. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of database technologies and solid coding and computer system skills. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Database Engineer work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Database Engineer typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Senior Database and Server Engineer

    We are seeking a Senior Database and Server Engineer that will be responsible for the support and maintenance of enterprise database systems. These systems include Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Databases, Azure/AWS cloud data platforms and associated systems. This position will also be responsible for managing, installing and maintaining Windows Server and Red Hat Linux virtual operating systems. This position will be involved in troubleshooting complex technical issues and mitigate risk through technical solution development. May be called upon to provide support for service issues or failures at any time. This position will be in an on-call rotation.

    • Perform database administration both on-prem and in Azure/AWS including performance monitoring and tuning, files maintenance, user interfaces, backup, restore and recovery processes, security, capacity management, data modeling, storage, and user access.
    • Perform database installs and upgrades including patch management.
    • Document systems, programs, integrity rules and user access.
    • Perform Windows and Red Hat Linux virtual server administration both on-prem and in Azure/AWS.
    • Design, implement, maintain, and provide mentorship for multiple county initiatives to solve challenging problems and deliver value to King County.
    • Provide consulting and technical support for application programmers, systems analysts, management, clients and users.
    • Analyze servers, databases, database applications and other systems to determine the sources of problems; serve as liaison with vendors in resolving problems.
    • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and mitigate risk through technical solution development; plan and configure new and emerging production domain technology in support of client requirements and King County business needs.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    • 3 years of experience supporting various versions of SQL Server Enterprise AND/OR 3 years of experience supporting various versions of Microsoft Windows Server or an equivalent combination of experience, education, or training that provides the knowledge/skills/abilities necessary to perform the job
    • Experience supporting Azure data platforms or an equivalent combination of experience, education, or training that provides the knowledge/skills/abilities necessary to perform the job
    • Knowledge of large-scale relational database environments, software, and integration tools
    • Knowledge of Azure/AWS data platforms, including Azure SQL DB & DW, Azure DevOps pipelines, and automation of databases
    • Knowledge of Scrum and/or Agile methodologies
    • Experience supporting a hybrid cloud with databases deployed on-prem and in the cloud
    • Experience supporting RedHat Enterprise Linux operating systems
    • Experience with VMware vSphere
    • Experience with the installation and configuration of Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server and databases
    • Experience with developing and utilizing PowerShell scripts
    • Robust verbal and written communication skills
    • Must be a strong team player who can build partnerships with others with also the ability to work independently
    • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
    • Demonstrates willingness and ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally to obtain information or solve problems in support of the team’s goals
    • Successful clearance of Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check is required for the selected candidate.
    Desirable Qualifications
    • Degree in Computer Science or related field
    • Microsoft Azure certifications related to SQL and/or Windows Server
    • Red Hat Certifications (RHCE, RHCA and/or RHCSA)
    • Experience with Veeam
    • Scrum, Agile and/or SAFe Certifications
    • Azure DevOps/Pipeline release to production
    • CIFS, NFS, ISCSI, FCOE storage protocols

    Telecommuting Work
    The work associated with this position will be performed through telecommuting complimented with onsite work and meetings as needed. 
    Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

    Work Schedule
    This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime-eligible. Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek, normally 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Alternative work schedules may be considered. 

    This position will be in an on-call rotation.
