Database Engineer plans, designs, develops, and manages an organization's databases to ensure efficient data storage, access, and security. Collaborates with users to design, code, test, debug, and deploy databases that meet requirements and organizational needs. Being a Database Engineer writes queries, stored procedures and functions for database development. Monitors databases' performance, scalability, and security and modifies procedures to optimize database designs. Additionally, Database Engineer evaluates existing database design to determine necessary updates, performance tuning, and integration requirements. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of database technologies and solid coding and computer system skills. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. This classification provides technical design, development, implementation, and maintenance of database systems. The databases may be department-unique or may involve multiple County and non-County departments, activities, or agencies.

1) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or technical school in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer science, management information systems (MIS) or computer engineering, or a related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment, and three years of technical experience in the development and maintenance of database systems, which included programming and systems analysis.
(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

2) Three years of experience with Pima County as a GIS Analyst I or GIS Analyst II.
Licenses and Certificates: Some positions within this classification may require specialized certification relative to assignment at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial or promotional probation period. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or prior to completion of an initial or promotional probation period. Failure to obtain/maintain the required certification/licensures shall be grounds for termination.
