Dean of Arts and Sciences manages administrative functions of the college of arts and sciences. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Arts and Sciences leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Arts and Sciences requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Arts and Sciences manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.   • Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Under the direction of the Provost/Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Health Sciences provides leadership and coordination to the Health Sciences Division.  Plans and coordinates all aspects of the health sciences programs which align to the college mission.  Oversees curriculum and program development.  Enhances educational effectiveness of all assigned instructional areas.    

     

    Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Works with the Program Directors to provide leadership in curriculum improvement by constant review, regular evaluation, revision, and attention to the relevance of all courses and programs.

    2. Provides leadership to the program directors, faculty, and staff.

    3. Organizes divisional and departmental meetings.  Attends leadership, dean, and other meetings as assigned.  

    4. Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development and program reviews, including development and assessment of student learning outcomes.

    5. Supervises in the preparation of schedules, teaching assignments, class, and room assignments; monitor enrollments and faculty loads.

    6. Monitor enrollment in classes and make adjustments as appropriate according to registration trends and fiscal demands.

    7. Promote, organize, coordinate, and develop programs in conjunction with program directors.

    8. Oversee preparation of appropriate documentation required to obtain and maintain programmatic accreditation.

    9. Develop and foster positive working relationships with clinical sites; develop Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements and contracts for clinical sites.

    10. Coordinate and participate in the evaluation of instructional staff, including faculty, program directors, and support staff.

    11. Participate in the recruitment, selection, and orientation of qualified full-time and adjunct faculty and clinical instructors; evaluate credentials/records for all faculty.

    12. Prepare and submit reports required for performance measures, federal and state reporting, articulation agreements, and accreditation compliance.

    13. Participate in the development of informational materials for publication (brochures, pamphlets, etc.); provide data pertaining to the unit for the College catalog.

    14. Participate in the development of external grants pertaining to the units.

    15. Provide leadership relating to student issues, including students' complaints, faculty advising, and registration.

    16. Establish and maintain external relationships with business and industry, community, secondary and post-secondary institutions, and other appropriate agencies.

    17. Be responsible for budget recommendations and administration of the budgets in his/ her area of responsibility.

    18. Participate in college-wide committees.

    19. Manage the Health Sciences departments involving accreditation of professional organizations and agencies; Participate in Southern Association accreditation (SACSCOC) activities; implement the Instructional Effectiveness plan related to areas supervised. Ensure that programs comply with licensing bodies and regulations.

    20. Perform other duties assigned by the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

    Required: 

    • Master's degree in a health profession field from an accredited institution of higher education

    • Minimum three years of full-time distinguished teaching experience in a health degree program, preferably at a community college. z

    • Minimum five years of progressively increasing administrative experience (such as Chair, Director, Associate Dean) in nursing/ health programs, preferably in a community college.  

    • Minimum of five years of health science compliance experience, particularly with the Texas Board of Nursing and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.  

    • Registered Nurse in Texas or eligible for reciprocity in Texas or certification/licensure in a health profession


    Preferred: 

    • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education in a health-related field, education, or leadership 
    • Minimum five years of full-time distinguished teaching and research experience in a health degree program, preferably with tenure status and in the nursing field.
    • Minimum five years of progressively increasing administrative experience (such as Chair, Director, Associate Dean) in nursing/health programs, preferably in a community college.
    • Minimum of five years of health science compliance experience, particularly with the Texas Board of Nursing and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

    The Dean of Health Sciences reports directly to the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.


    Physical Requirements  

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
