Dean of Communications manages administrative functions of the college of communications. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Communications leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Communications requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Communications manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Communications typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Manage and serve the communications needs for designated corporate strategies and business units of Black Hills Energy fostering productive working partnerships with assigned internal business clients to create and support communications strategies, initiatives and solutions designed to enhance the company's brand and reputation and connect internal and/or external partners to our vision, mission, values and corporate strategic goals; lead the development and implementation of communications strategies, plans and campaigns; create engaging written, visual and other communications content; optimize and run communications channels; collaborate with team members and participate in cross-functional teams to improve the overall effectiveness of the company's communications needs.

    Pay Range: $92,500 - $152,450 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

    Location: Our corporate headquarters located in Rapid City, South Dakota.

    Essential Functions:
    • Foster productive working partnerships with internal clients to identify communications needs, create annual programs, develop, and implement initiative-specific marketing strategies and communications plans.
    • Handle elements involved in the successful implementation of communications plans and campaigns to ensure message alignment, channel optimization, appropriate scheduling, copy creation, design components, performance measurement and other production needs.
    • Create engaging content consistent with the company’s brand standards for communications and marketing materials, including the ability to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively across multiple channels (including key messages, talking points, print copy, digital and social media content).
    • Provide advice and counsel to internal clients and teammates on effective communications strategies, as well as to revise, edit and enhance communications consistent with our brand and to build the company’s reputation.
    • Identify, use and develop communications channels and appropriate media to reach customers, employees and other audiences, and identify and employ strategies to measure impact and effectiveness of plans and tactics.
    • Contribute as a member of the Strategic Communications team and other departments to support strategies, innovate and deliver results to strengthen the company’s brand and reputation with customers, external partners and employees.
    • Represent the company before and engage in community, employee, and other stakeholder opportunities.
    • Partner with and manage external vendors as necessary.
    • Handle other projects as necessary.
    What You'll Need:

    • Bachelor's Degree public relations, communications, marketing journalism or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Minimum of (5) five years’ experience in communications, public journalism or related field
    What Is Desired Or Can Be Taught:
    • Experience leading communications or related programs and project teams.
    • Experience with providing service to internal or external corporate clients in support of communications needs.
    • History of successful project management and execution.
    • Experience in the energy industry preferred, including knowledge of retail utility, electric, natural gas, oil, natural resource, environmental, and/or other energy issues.
    • Knowledge of and experience with communications, marketing and outreach techniques to reach targeted audiences, including but not limited to advertising, earned media, digital media, printed collaterals, direct mail and grassroots.
    • Personal drive, creativity, and initiative to create opportunities to connect with various audiences.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication and persuasive skills.
    • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work independently with agility to prioritize multiple projects, collaborators, and target dates in a fast-paced environment.
    • Dedication to outstanding customer service for internal clients, teammates and external customers.
    • Ability to analyze complex issues, interpret and communicate them in a concise, understandable format to multiple audiences.
