Dean of Continuing Education manages administrative functions of the college of continuing education. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Continuing Education leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Continuing Education requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Continuing Education manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Continuing Education typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     We are seaching for the Dean of our School of Pharmacy, which is located on our Knoxville,- Parkside Campus.  


    Administrative Responsibilities

    1. Serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Pharmacy

    2. Provide strategic oversight and direction to both on-campus and hybrid/online academic pathways

    3. Achieve excellence in NAPLEX / MPJE pass rate

    4. Lead the administration and faculty of the School of Pharmacy in planning, securing resources and implementing and evaluating activities related to academic and administrative operations, research, service, and patient care programs

    5. Represent the School of Pharmacy to South College and to various outside constituents and stakeholders

    6. Lead the administration and faculty in developing the vision for the School of Pharmacy

    7. Lead the faculty in strategic planning activities to accomplish the School of Pharmacy mission in teaching, research, service, and patient care

    8. Monitor School of Pharmacy progress in achieving its strategic plan and leading the administration and faculty in modifying the strategic plan as necessary

    9. Implement, monitor, and adjust program activities to accomplish the policies established by the faculty for the delivery and evaluation of the curriculum leading to the Pharm.D. degree

    10. Monitor and modify the organizational structure for the School of Pharmacy to best achieve the strategic plan and staff the organizational structure, including associate and assistant deans, experiential program director, department chairs, hybrid/online director, other administrative positions, and faculty

    11. Appoint the associate and assistant deans, hybrid/online director, experiential program director, and department chairs to their respective administrative positions and appoint other administrative and supervisory personnel of the School of Pharmacy on the recommendation of the position’s immediate supervisor.

    12. Appoint members, designate chairs, and provide charges to Standing Committees according to the School of Pharmacy Bylaws and to Ad Hoc Committees that may be established from time to time

    13. Upon the recommendation of the department chairs, recommend the appointment of individuals to the faculty and staff of the School of Pharmacy

    14. Upon the recommendation of the department chairs and the Faculty Rank Peer Review Committee, approve the promotion of faculty

    15. Provide recommendations on the continued employment of the School of Pharmacy faculty and staff

    16. Develop, monitor, and adjust an annual budget linked to the strategic plan of the School of Pharmacy

    17. In consultation with the administration and department chairs, allocate space and make office and laboratory assignments within the School of Pharmacy building

    18. On the recommendation of the Admissions Committee, admit applicants to the student body of the School of Pharmacy

    19. On the recommendation of the Academic Standing and Promotion Review Committee, place students on academic probation, suspend students and/or expel students from the School of Pharmacy

    20. Serve as the final arbitrator of School of Pharmacy student, faculty and staff disputes

    21. Plan and implement development activities for the School of Pharmacy

    22. Coordinate the activities of the various South College central support services as they relate specifically to the School of Pharmacy and its programs and personnel

    23. Plan and conduct School of Pharmacy faculty meetings

    24. Attend department faculty meetings and committee meetings upon the invitation of the chairs of the departments and committees

    25. Coordinate the Dean's Advisory Council and the Dean's Student Advisory Council

    26. Supervise associate and assistant deans, experiential program director, department chairs and dean’s office staff, with responsibilities including assigning work, evaluating performance, and rewarding or disciplining employees who report directly to the dean, as well as addressing complaints and resolving problems of persons who report to those individuals reporting directly to the dean.


    B. Teaching and Education Responsibilities

    The teaching and education responsibilities of the Dean are limited in order to ensure full availability to carry out the Dean’s administrative obligations and responsibilities.


    C. Professional Responsibilities

    1. Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the South College School of Pharmacy 

    2. Participate in appropriate national, state, and local professional and scientific organizations

    3. Develop and maintain professional relationships with all administrators, faculty, staff and students in the School  of Pharmacy and other Colleges and Departments of South College

    4. Conduct oneself in a positive and professional manner as a representative of the School of Pharmacy and South College 

    5. Adhere to all School of Pharmacy and South College policies and procedures


    D. Professional Development Responsibilities

    1. Complete a minimum of two professional development activities annually

    2. Prepare an annual portfolio of accomplishments in the areas of teaching, service, scholarship, and professional development


    E. Education and Experience

    The Dean of the School  of Pharmacy must possess a Pharm.D. degree with residency or comparable experience or other doctoral degree. In addition, the Dean must demonstrate the following knowledge, skill and ability or be able to explain and demonstrate that the Dean can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skill and ability.

    1. Ten years experience in pharmacy education with administrative experience

    2. Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership and management abilities

    4. Extensive knowledge of current professional issues in healthcare and pharmacy

    5. Effective interactions with national, state, and local healthcare and pharmacy organizations; the Tennessee Tripartite Committee; state regulatory agencies, including the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy; Tennessee legislators; and other professional colleges/schools both within Tennessee and in other states
