Dean of Continuing Education manages administrative functions of the college of continuing education. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Continuing Education leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Continuing Education requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Continuing Education manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Continuing Education typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Immediate Supervisor:         Building Principals

    Classification:                        Certificated, Non-Administrative, FLSA Exempt

    Representation:                Union representation available by the Wahluke Education Association

    Terms of Employment:          As per Wahluke Education Association Agreement work schedule. Wahluke Certified staff also receive a 5% Professional Learning Activity Stipend; 8 TRI-Days; Professional Developement Funds; Longevity Stipends beginning in fifth year of teaching.

    Dean of Students Summary:  The Dean of Students will work with the building Principals and staff  to instill a climate at Wahluke High School that is conducive to student learning emphasizing mutual respect, safety, and equitable opportunities for all students. Promotes good attendance rates. Identify students with attendance issues or disciplinary problems and addresses those issues with parents to create a positive outcome following District processes and procedures. Performs a variety of tasks in coordinating the successful implementation of academic and social-emotional interventions for students at risk of  not meeting grade level or end of course standards. Conduct follow up to referrals from staff pertaining to student conduct and discipline. Assist in the overall management of students within the building.

    • Enforce and reinforce student conduct consistent with building and district policies and procedures as well as state statutes.
    • Assist with the academic assessment and appropriate placement of students.
    • Promote student success by providing preventative strategies and respond to identified student needs within the school setting.
    • Understand and apply due process in a considerate and dignified manner.
    • Communicate with students, staff and parents in a positive and professional manner.
    • Able to promote high expectations, demonstrate a caring attitude and establish an environment that supports high achievement in students.
    • The employee assists teachers with developing strategies and techniques for assessing and fulfilling instructional deficiencies of their students. 
    • The Dean will assist teachers and staff following the Multi-Tiered system framework of support
    • Uses positive and productive techniques for improving student behavior.
    • Works collaboratively with parents and staff
    • Advocates for the school, its staff, students and programs.
    • Reports regularly to parents using a variety of strategies and is responsive to parental concerns.
    • Enforces school rules, manages student behavior, and maintains accurate records of student attendance, conduct, and academic performance records.
    • Accurately and timely compile and submit reports on student behavior, conduct, attendance as needed. 
    • Actively participates as a team member during meetings with faculty, staff and administration in reaching educational goals.
    • Work closely with the principal to implement building expectations and goals.
    • Implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Responsiveness to Instruction (RtI)
    • Analyzing and utilizing student and teacher data using school systems to guide data-based decision-making
    • Provide classroom-based instruction on related topics on a regular basis.
    • Provide observations, consultation and classroom presentation services for building teachers.
    • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
    • Act as team leader for the Response to Intervention Team (RTI).
    • Plan and direct peer mediation, restorative circles, restorative sessions.
    • Coordinate student services between school and community social agencies.
    • Develop and provide leadership with building character education, and at-risk intervention programs.
    •  Organize and conduct parenting skills workshops.
    • Is enthusiastic, flexible and committed to students reaching high learning standards
    • Experience and knowledge of Safe and Civil Schools preferred.
    • Collaborate with other district staff associated with student behavior, issues, discipline, and academic expectations.
    • Works cooperatively with other school and district staff.
    • Additional responsibilities to assist the Principal in the efficient operation of the school.
    • Maintain confidentiality.
    • Other duties as assigned

    •  Education and/or Experience: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and Washington State Certificate.  An administrator certificate or completion of an administrative training program helpful, but not required. College preparation or degree in school counseling or behavior analyst may receive additional consideration.
    • Successful Secondary teaching experience required.
    • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
    • Training and/or experience in secondary education which demonstrates knowledge of effective parent communication techniques, basic skills development, alternative learning experiences, multicultural awareness and dealing with issues of poverty.
    • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid  conclusions. Ability to interpret history concepts and convey that meaning to students.  Must be capable of making decisions that can affect student’s educational process and emergency situations that may occur when working with students.
    • Knowledge of, or ability to gain knowledge of child abuse/neglect report procedures.
    • Ability to demonstrate through verbal and non-verbal behavior a warm and caring personality, a sense of humor, and a positive, enthusiastic approach to working with students, parents and staff.
    • Knowledge of, or ability to gain knowledge of applicable character education program and social skills programs.
    • Attend work as scheduled.
    • Model appropriate professional behavior and follow District policy and directives and state laws. 
    • Attend trainings as recommended and/or directed which may include afterhours or overnight travel.
    • The willingness or qualifications of an applicant to coach or supervise activities and/or sports in addition to his/her teaching responsibilities will be considered.
    • Work as a collaborative, participatory, and contributing team member. 

     

    Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally with assistance, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
