Dean of Education manages administrative functions of the college of education. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Education leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Education requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Education manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Education typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.   • Summary Description: The Teaching Dean of Education reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and holds a join appointment of 50% teaching load and 50% administrative load. In this way administrative work is grounded in the teaching and learning perspective. Administratively the position serves as the Academic Leader for the Education Department and guides work in curriculum, staffing of courses, advising, mentorship for adjunct faculty for the undergraduate and graduate programs in Education. s  The position also works with external partners such as school districts, the AAQEP accrediting body, and Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.  This position requires a licensed K-12 educator (teacher or administrator certification) who is licensed in the State of Oregon and experienced in teaching a range of courses in education and other areas related to Education. 

    Primary Job Duties:
    The successful candidate must present strong evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position, which include, but are not limited to:
    • Provide innovative, strategic, and collaborative leadership of the teacher preparation programs.
    • Understand how to maximize enrollments in academic programs. Strategize on transfer pathways in teacher education.
    • Understanding of online delivery of educational programs.
    • Coordinate course offerings and schedule with academic programs across the university.
    • Keep current on developments and research in teacher education and facilitate relevant trainings for faculty.
    • Engage faculty in continuous program evaluation to measure and increase effectiveness.
    • Develop, review, and maintain a system of assessment of student progress within WPU.
    • Maintain and report to AAQEP on program accreditation. Communicate licensure information and data to faculty and staff.
    •  Recommend teacher candidates for licensure. Oversee compliance with all requirements of the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission and other accrediting agencies.
    • Facilitate student information needs, respond to student issues, and take appropriate corrective actions.
    • Represent Warner Pacific University education programs at professional association meetings.
    • Develop and maintain partnerships with P-12 school districts in the greater Portland Metro area.
    • Work collegially with faculty, staff and students.
    • Understand and positively promote the university’s mission, core themes, vision and values.
    • Teach courses related to clinical experiences, advise and supervise student teachers, and teach other courses within areas of expertise, to include any of the following:
      • Curriculum development and/or review
      • Multiple subjects (ECE/EL) pedagogy
      • Literacy instruction
      • Assessment
      • Cultural competence and equity in the classroom
      • ESOL pedagogy
      • Technology integration
      • Special education, exceptional learners
      • Other areas of exceptional expertise capable of contributing to the growth and development of Warner Pacific’s program.
    • Contribute to the support and implementation of the University Strategic Plan.
    • Participate in Warner Pacific University professional development opportunities.
    • Adhere to University policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to a Christian liberal arts education by upholding the mission of the University and abiding by the Employment Standards and Lifestyle Agreement. Warner Pacific is affiliated with the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana).

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree  in Education or related field.
    • A record of at least three years senior supervisory experience including personnel and budget management
    • Minimum of 5 years teaching in the PK-12 environment.
    • Hold teaching authorizations in middle school and high school.
    • Familiarity with state regulations, reporting, and operations.
    • Experience working with diverse populations.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Doctorate Degree in Education
    • University teaching experience
    • A record of productive community partnerships and collaborative leadership
    • Demonstrated understanding of educational needs and priorities specific to the state of Oregon.
    • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion for diverse populations
    • Evidence of contributions to education policy and best practices, including experience in assessing and improving student learning outcomes
    • A record of involvement in graduate education
    • Experience at an AAQEP/NCATE/CAEP accredited institution.
    • Experience in preparing a national accreditation application.
    • Record of a research agenda related to critical issues in education.
    • Record of building productive relationships with P-12 and community partners.
    • Ability to teach effectively and mentor adult learners as well as traditional students.
    • Service in positions of leadership in professional organizations.
    • Experience in grant writing and administration.
