      SUMMARY
      The dean of students will support the building principal with the essential duties and responsibilities noted below. The literacy coach will work closely with teachers in grades 5-6 to enhance literacy instruction, develop strategies for differentiation, and support the implementation of research-based best practices.

      REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
      The dean of students/literacy coach reports to and is evaluated by the building principal and Executive Director of Instruction.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
      • Performs a variety of duties to assist the Principal in managing the school.
      • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
      • Supervises students on campus before and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
      • Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings as needed regarding truant, absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
      • Assist or act as 504 Coordinator for the building.
      • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings, Student Study Team meetings (SST) and 504 meetings, and assists with creating behavior plans.
      • Liaison to student groups, current/future extracurricular activities and events. Supervises activities, including evening activities, as assigned.
      • Attends meetings of parent and other groups, as needed.
      • Works with the Principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students.
      • Assists the Principal with provision of staff development programs.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
      • Provides support to teachers in the areas of classroom management, instruction, planning and preparation.
      • Collaborate with teachers to analyze student data and identify areas for improvement in literacy instruction.
      • Provide ongoing professional development and coaching to teachers in grades 5-6, focusing on best practices in literacy instruction as outlined in the GELN Essential Standards and LETRS training.
      • Model effective instructional strategies and provide feedback to teachers through classroom observations and coaching sessions.
      • Support teachers in developing and implementing differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
      • Facilitate data-driven discussions to monitor student progress and adjust instructional practices accordingly.
      • Stay current on research and trends in literacy education, and share relevant resources and strategies with teachers.
      • Collaborate with other instructional coaches and district leadership to align literacy initiatives with district goals and priorities.

      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
      Assists in the supervision and evaluation of building support staff, as assigned by the principal.

      REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

      • Three (3) years full time teaching experience.
      • Masters in Reading or related area.
      • Current teaching certification, Elementary or Middle School preferred.
      • Recent and relevant training in literacy instruction and using research-based best practices, such as the GELN Essential Standards and LETRS training.

      LANGUAGE SKILLS
      Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public.

      MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
      Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

      REASONING ABILITY
      Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
