Being a Dean of Engineering leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Engineering requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Engineering manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Engineering typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Job Description:
    The Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology will provide innovative, equity-minded leadership to fulfil the vision of the college to cultivate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) leaders who advance sustainable solutions to global challenges, and to drive transformative change through fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the College and reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean provides vision and leadership for the College, overseeing academic program quality, faculty development and achievement, department chair leadership, student learning and success, and administration of budgets, facilities, and resources. Additionally, the Dean is responsible for administration of off-campus programs, collective bargaining agreement implementation, policies and procedures, accreditations, external collaborations and partnerships, external grants and contracts, and development and fundraising for the College, in alignment with the division of Academic Affairs', University's, and System's strategic directions and goals. The Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology serves on the University's Council of Deans and President's Expanded Cabinet.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Earned PhD, or other terminal degree in a discipline appropriate to the College.




    • Combination of higher education administration experience (with increasing levels of responsibility, at the level of department chair or higher), and faculty experience (commensurate with tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor or professor in any discipline) with a track record of successful experience and accomplishments in teaching excellence and innovation, and research/scholarly/creative endeavors.

    • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and advancing racial/social justice and equity in curriculum, communities, and engagements.

    • Demonstrated ability to promote student learning, engagement, and success, both undergraduate and graduate level.

    • Demonstrated commitment to leading and supporting academic program quality, including experience with program accreditation, at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

    • Knowledge of current standards and best practices in academic program design and development, policy development, curriculum implementation, and program review or accreditation (i.e., ABET and other accreditation processes), for undergraduate and graduate degree programs, certificate/certification programs, and professional development.

    • Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships and to develop public and private partnerships, with a variety of external stakeholders and constituencies, to achieve goals.

    • Demonstrated ability to articulate, implement, and operationalize a vision for a College seeking solutions for regional issues with global connections, transforming teaching and learning through in and out of class learning, exploration, and mentorship.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.




    • Successful completion of a system or national higher education leadership development program, such as those offered by the Minnesota State system, American Association for State Colleges & Universities (AASCU), American Council on Education (ACE), Berkeley Executive Leadership Program, HERS Institutes, or Harvard Institutes for Higher Education, among others.

    • Professional Licensure/Certification: As appropriate to the position holders discipline.

    • Demonstrated experience with current and emerging student populations and pedagogical trends in the sciences, engineering, and technology disciplines.

    • Record of identifying and securing federal, foundation, and other sources of funding to support initiatives in fostering and advancing racial/social justice and equity in curriculum, communities, and engagements.

    • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead in a collective bargaining, shared governance environment.

    • Demonstrated ability to develop strategies and budgets (i.e., instructional, research, technology, facility, personnel, financial, etc.) and implement those strategies to high impact programming and services.

    • Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships within the University, including faculty, department chairs, deans, staff, and students within the College, and other internal stakeholders across the divisions.

    • Demonstrated commitment to leading and supporting academic program quality and excellence, at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

    • Experience working in a public higher education university and state system

    Other Requirements:
    Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.

    Frequent evening and weekend work. Overnight travel required, as needed to meet the duties and responsibilities of the position.

    Ability to travel regionally, nationally, and internationally, to meet with a wide variety of stakeholders, partners, and other constituencies, to meet the duties and responsibilities of the position.

    Based on the essential functions of this positions, MMB Policy #1422, and University policies relating to flexible work, this position is eligible for the following work modes:
    • Telework: A position with a work arrangement that allows an employee to perform work on a regular basis at a telework location that is not the employees permanent/principal work location. Up to 20% of the time.




    This position has been designated as weather and emergency essential. In the event of a University closure or emergency event, incumbent is required to respond as requested.
