Dean of Engineering manages administrative functions of the college of engineering. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Engineering leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Engineering requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Engineering manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     Departmental Overview

    The College of Engineering (CoE) at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 240 faculty FTE, 2,100 graduate students and 3,000 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus.     The Administrative Manager I serves as the manager and key administrative officer for a variety of connected functional areas. Functional areas include finance, academic human resources, compliance and risk assessment, advancing diversity and outreach, and long and short range strategic planning in determining the mission and direction of activities through management of subordinate staff and in coordination with the Dean, Associate Deans, College senior staff, and campus leaders.

    Responsibilities

    50% Academic Personnel Management

    Serves as the senior advisor to the CoE Dean and Executive Associate Dean on all matters related to academic personnel, faculty retention, merit and promotion cases.
    Establishes and delegates assignments and general workflow to meet operational objectives.
    Designs and leads monthly academic personnel meetings and trainings for the multiple AP units that coordinate with ERSO (CED, I-School, CoE).
    Maintains integrity of College Academic Personnel through management and oversight of staff.
    Solves complex escalation issues regarding faculty, often with outside entities, including National Labs and other federal government entities.
    Serves as key administrative officer for the College's endowed chair appointment process, including development and oversight of statistical analysis models and processes to assess faculty advancement, research and service contributions. Analyzes and responds to changing campus and university AP policies.
    Communicates policies and practices to CoE teams as appropriate. Manages, plans and administers all Academic operations for the College of Engineering.
    20% Compliance and Risk Assessment

    Serves as the College's key administrative officer, maintaining integrity of CoE and campus through oversight of faculty conflict of commitment policy compliance.
    Formulates and administers internal College policies and processes to guide faculty in the reporting of extensive CoE faculty extensive commercial technology and product development activities.
    Possibly serve as the UC Berkeley campus or CoE representative on the system wide working group developing the electronic Outside Activity Tracking System (OATS), a program with campus wide and system wide impact.
    Serves as campus resource in coordination with the campus Academic Personnel Director for OATS system policy and functionality.
    15% Diversity and Outreach

    Directs and manages college-wide faculty recruitments, involving multiple departments.
    Formulates and directs administrative activities and the development and analysis of effective search plan strategies associated with the college-wide diversity initiative.
    Coordinates with campus leaders to devise new programs to create effective strategies to expand faculty awareness of the effects of implicit bias.
    Formulates policies and guidelines to carry out CoE's mission for advancing faculty diversity and creating an inclusive environment.
    Interacts with higher-level management regarding complex or not well-defined situations.
    15% Strategic Planning for Faculty Engagement

    Develops new approaches/strategies of how to operationalize new and unprecedented revenue opportunities within the limitations and constraints of UCB policies; includes support for executive education, online education, and revenue-generating degree programs.
    Formulates policies and guidelines to accomplish operational objectives and long-range planning for multiple College-wide and inter-unit programs, including augmented graduate groups, joint programs with other UCB units, and joint programs between UCB and other UC campuses.
    Designs and develops technical solutions to enhance reporting capabilities on faculty appointment, advancement, and research activities for statistical and strategic analysis for a variety of applications, including fund-raising activities.
    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
    Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
    Expert knowledge of academic personnel policies and practices.
    Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals.
    Excellent project management skills.
    Ability to work with high level of ambiguity.
    Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and develop and maintain high standards of customer service.
    Thorough knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
    Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $105,500 to $180,000 annually. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
