Dean of Fine Arts manages administrative functions of the college of fine arts. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Fine Arts leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Fine Arts requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Fine Arts manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Fine Arts typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Position Summary

    The Director of Fine Arts will oversee the school’s fine arts program (instrumental, vocal, and general music, theater, visual arts, dance) and related activities, including but not limited to: Insuring that program components maximize the arts experience of every student; providing information and serving as a resource to others; defining objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing, and maintaining assigned services in compliance with established guidelines.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Directs the development, evaluation, revision and alignment of fine arts curriculum K-8 in the areas of instrumental music, vocal music, visual art, drama/theater and nonathletic extracurricular activities, including extended learning opportunities before and after school; 
    • Serves as the school contact on all non-athletic, extracurricular matters; 
    • Directs, organizes and coordinates the development of new and/or innovative fine arts programs for the school; 
    • Works with all fine arts teachers and non-athletic extracurricular activities sponsors on educational and administrative procedural needs of their programs; 
    • Develops and maintains an inventory of all fine arts equipment; 
    • Assists in making travel arrangements for all fine arts and non-athletic student groups, as required; 
    • Plans and manages fine arts and non-athletic extracurricular activities; 
    • Arranges for staff development, workshops, clinics, and staff meetings designed to improve instruction; 
    • Reviews and evaluates latest developments in the fine arts curriculum; 
    • Enforces all state policies governing extracurricular events and participation; 
    • Implements the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy; 
    • Compiles, maintains, and presents all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required; 
    • Works with school leader regarding fine arts budgets, purchasing and scheduling; 
    • Develops and monitors all extracurricular budgets in the fine arts and non-athletic extracurricular areas; 
    • Prepares specifications for fine arts bids and supervise the purchase of fine arts materials and equipment;
    • Performs other duties as required.


    Educational Background
    • Bachelor’s degree and teaching certification required 
    • Master’s degree in Fine Arts or related area preferred


    Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in at least one of the areas of fine arts;  
    • At least three (3) years of successful instructional leadership experience in an area of fine arts; 
    • Expertise in leadership development, building effective teams, coaching, and ensuring professional growth for instructional and support staff; 
    • Possesses successful experience designing and delivering professional learning; engaging a variety of stakeholders 
    • Pursues and implements innovative ideas and methods, remains committed to seeking out and sharing current research and evidence-based best practices; 
    • Knowledgeable of operations, management and organizational design and uses this knowledge to ensure improved student outcomes; 
    • Establishes and maintains collaborative, productive relationships with others.

    Salaries are determined by educational background and/or relevant years of experience.

    - Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) part of the workday;

    - Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely; 

    - Normal setting for this job is an office/school setting.     


    Performance Evaluation

    The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
