  • The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s College of Humanities and Sciences seeks qualified candidates for the position of Associate Dean of the School of Social Sciences beginning June 1, 2024. UMHB seeks faculty who are active Christians and dedicated teacher-scholars to prepare students for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society.

    The Associate Dean will report to the Dean of the college. The college includes three schools: the School of Humanities, the School of Natural Sciences, and the School of Social Sciences. The college offers undergraduate degree programs in 16 fields of study: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Engineering, English, Film Studies, History, Mass Communication, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Spanish, and Speech Communication. A number of these programs also have teaching certification tracks.

    In addition, the college provides the foundation of the core curriculum that undergraduate students in all majors must study. These studies prepare all UMHB students to lead lives of meaning and purpose as informed, responsible citizens.

    The School of Social Sciences is comprised of the Department of Psychology; the Department of Social Work, Sociology, and Criminal Justice; the Department of History and Political Science. Together, these departments provide quality program through robust curricula. The School of Social Sciences has 16 faculty and staff, and offers 19 majors.     UMHB is conveniently located in Belton, an historic town of 22,000 in the heart of central Texas. Nearby cities are Temple (5 miles), Waco (45 miles), Austin (65 miles), San Antonio (130 miles) and Dallas/Ft. Worth (130 miles).     Specific Responsibilities:

    Teaching: The associate dean will have a teaching assignment equivalent to two (2) undergraduate courses per long semester. Activities required of all faculty include exemplary teaching, curriculum development, student advising; professional attainment; and service to department, college, university, and the community. Summer teaching, if any, is paid on a separate faculty compensation scale.

    Administrative: Primary responsibilities include oversight of assigned search committees; orientation and professional development of faculty; direct supervision and evaluation of full time faculty, provision of support to department chairs in hiring, supervising and evaluating adjunct faculty; supervise assigned school staff; coordination of the school’s course schedule for each term; propose new programs and course curriculum; represent the school at recruiting and other university events; program accreditation and assessment activities; budget development and oversight; articulate and implement university policy.

    This is a 10-month administrative position that includes a faculty appointment. Dates of the 10th month will be determined by the dean and provost. The associate dean will have a teaching assignment equivalent to two undergraduate or graduate courses per long semester. This position is eligible for normal, full-time faculty compensation for summer teaching.

    Qualifications:

    • A doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a discipline taught within one of the School of Social Sciences’ departments is required:
      • Psychology: doctorate in Psychology or closely related field
      • Social Work: MSW with two (2) years’ post-masters experience, plus doctorate in social work or closely related field
      • Criminal Justice: doctorate in criminal justice or criminology
      • Sociology: doctorate in sociology
      • History: doctorate in history
      • Political Science: doctorate in political science or closely related field
    • Strong preference will be given to candidates with previous academic administrative and/or supervisory experience.
    • Excellent teaching and communication skills, a dedication to professional attainment, and commitment to quality improvement are essential.
    • Must be an active, and committed Christian.
