Dean of Humanities manages administrative functions of the college of humanities. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Humanities leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Humanities requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Humanities manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Humanities typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     General Function

    The College Dean is responsible for the administration of the college which may include, but is not limited to, department head and faculty recruitment and development, department head and faculty evaluation, program development, program review, student advisement, college budgeting and budget control, and indirect supervision of the teaching, research, and service activities of the college.

    Description of Primary Duties

    As chief academic and administrative officer of the College, the dean provides professional, intellectual, and administrative leadership while helping to craft and pursue a vision consistent with the University's Long-Range Plan and Public Affairs mission as well as the focus provided by the provost's office through the Deans' Team. The dean oversees two schools; the chancellor the Mountain Grove campus has a dotted line reporting relationship to the dean as well. The dean supports faculty, staff, and students by promoting excellence in teaching and research; encouraging faculty development; strengthening student recruitment, retention, and success; supporting a commitment to inclusive engagement; building partnerships with external constituents and public organizations; pursuing grants and engaging in fundraising, alumni relations, and development activities; and demonstrating sound fiscal management and transparency.

    Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

    The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of College Dean are prescribed by the Provost and the University President. A record of inclusive conduct and evidence of multicultural skills in the workplace is required.

    Additional Qualifications

    1) A terminal degree in a discipline within the College;
    2) An established record of scholarly research, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment
    as a tenured Associate or Full Professor;

    3) Evidence of significant administrative experience including but not limited to fiscal oversight,
    personnel management, program evaluation and strategic planning;

    4) Evidence of successful leadership, organizational, and communication skills;

    5) Demonstrated success in collaborating with other universities and community colleges, engaging with alumni and community organizations, and participating on external boards and councils; and

    6) A demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusive engagement.
