Dean of Humanities manages administrative functions of the college of humanities. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Humanities leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Humanities requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Humanities manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Humanities typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.   • Elizabethtown College (in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) seeks an accomplished, student-centered, and resourceful leader to serve as Dean, School of Sciences and Health, which has been newly configured, beginning July 1, 2024. Working with strong faculty and institutional leadership, the successful Dean will build on existing strength of departments and programs within the School to enhance visibility; collaboration and coordination between its programs; and student and faculty recruitment, retention, and success. The position provides an opportunity to support the College’s commitment to “Educate for Service,” with emphasis on relationship-centered and experiential learning inside the classroom, research, and clinical laboratories, and in partnership with community organizations through internships, placements, and community-based learning experiences.
    Preparing graduates to improve health and well-being of people, animals, and the environment, the School of Sciences and Health, comprised of seven academic units, is home to 780 students and 41 full time faculty. The School offers pathways in:

    Job Duties
    Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the School Dean:
    • Develops and supports faculty and staff teams within the academic units of the School to contribute to advance College, School, and educational mission and strategic goals including those related to student recruitment, retention, persistence, and professional success;
    • Fosters a collaborative, transparent, culturally aware, student-centered, and data-informed approach;
    • Supports collaboration with other Schools and academic programs, Student Life, Admissions, Marketing and Communications, institutional centers, and other units on campus to enrich educational opportunities and promote equitable student success;
    • Oversees and manages academic planning, assessment of student learning and program effectiveness, and educational policies and practices, including support of accredited programs and faculty in a teacher-scholar model;
    • Works with the College’s School for Graduate and Professional Studies to build courses, curricula, and connections for adult, graduate, and online education;
    • Exercises sound fiscal stewardship of the School budget and resources;
    • Develops meaningful partnerships at local, regional, and national levels;
    • Contributes to fundraising efforts and donor cultivation to advance the initiatives of the School

    Required Qualifications
    • Terminal degree from an accredited institution in a field represented in the School.
    • Five or more years of progressive leadership. Higher Education leadership strongly preferred.
    • Proven ability to serve students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
    • Previous experience managing complex budgets.



    Preferred Qualifications
    • Higher Education leadership strongly preferred.
    • Experience overseeing an accredited or certified academic program or licensure process.
    • Evidence of successful establishment of external partnerships, particularly within healthcare settings.
    • Ability to contribute to the diversity of the School and institution, whether through personal experience, teaching, scholarship, and/or service.
    • Record of teaching, scholarly activity, and service appropriate for the rank of associate or full professor.
    • Experience removing barriers and fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.
    • Demonstrable success as an action-oriented, collaborative community-builder who embraces opportunities for quality enhancement.
