    Assistant/Associate Professor of Law

    Center for Justice Reform Clinic

    South Royalton and Burlington, VT

    Faculty, Contract

    Salary:  $85,000-$95,000

Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS), a national leader in restorative justice and environmental law, invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Law to join our Center for Justice Reform Clinic (CJRC). The CJRC is a part of the Center for Justice Reform – an internationally recognized program which exists to transform the ways communities engage with each other, respond to harm, and pursue justice. Growing out of the VLGS immigration clinic, the CJRC is the only removal defender and one of the largest immigration legal service providers in Vermont.

The faculty member’s duties include teaching clinic classes year-round to juris doctor and masters, students and supervising those students in their work on clinic cases and other projects. Clinic faculty identify client intake priorities, case assignments, and collaborate with project partners in need of law/policy assistance. Faculty train and guide students to provide direct client services under their supervision, as well as policy, legal and educational assistance to partners. Clinic faculty are an essential part of the Center for Justice Reform and work closely with other CJR team members to help implement and administer law and policy programs which support students to: (1) provide meaningful direct services to Vermont’s justice-involved citizen and noncitizen populations through post-conviction relief/expungement, preparation of presentencing mitigation reports, representation in criminal parole proceedings, and providing representation before immigration courts and immigration enforcement operations; (2) provide humanitarian immigration assistance to Vermont’s noncitizen population fleeing persecution, survivors of criminal activity and/or severe trafficking, vulnerable young persons, and more; and (3) identify policy and advocacy opportunities to challenge the retributive responses on which our criminal and immigration systems are built. The faculty member hired for this position will join a vibrant and supportive clinical community at VLGS.

The position is scheduled to start July 1, 2024; though the precise start date is flexible. The selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to restorative justice, immigrants’ rights, and criminal justice reform. There is a strong preference for candidates with multiple years of experience in immigration and criminal defense work, and with multilingual language skills. The candidate must be a licensed attorney with at least three years of experience who is active and a member in good standing in Vermont or has the ability to waive into Vermont for bar licensing purposes. Clinical teaching experience or other evidence of ability to successfully mentor new attorneys will be highly valued. VLGS will consider applications with broadly defined expertise in immigration law and policy. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of, or potential for, strong, innovative, and engaged teaching.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will also play a role in strategic planning and assisting with fundraising efforts for the Clinic in coordination with the Grants Director, as well as participating in the life of the school through Committee service. VLGS faculty engage with other professionals and the public to contribute to the intellectual exchange of ideas, improve the law, and educate the public about the law, with an eye towards social justice. VLGS is in South Royalton, Vermont, a small town on the bank of the beautiful White River. Less than thirty minutes away lie the amenities of the adjacent communities of Hanover, NH (home to Dartmouth College) and Lebanon, NH. Burlington, VT, Boston, MA, and Montreal, QC, are all within a three-hour drive. The CJRC conducts much of its case activity from offices in downtown Burlington. Clinical teaching and other faculty responsibilities take place on the South Royalton campus.

    Requirements

To apply, applicants must complete an online application and electronically submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a writing sample, and (4) the names and contact information of three references. VLGS will only contact references for finalists. VLGS strongly encourages applications from those who would increase our community’s diversity. Direct inquiries about the position to blocker@vermontlaw.edu. This position will remain open until March 13, 2024.

If you are applying from a third-party website (Indeed, etc.) and are unable to attach additional materials to your online application, please apply directly at https://www.vermontlaw.edu/community/about-vls/employment-opportunities or email required documents to Christine Moyer, cmoyer@vermontlaw.edu.

Further, as you can read in my report to the UN Committee Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which is available here, the suffering which was inflicted upon Justina clearly meets the definition of torture expressly proscribed under the UN Convention Against Torture (CAT) and therefore was a violation of international humanitarian law.
