Dean of Nursing manages administrative functions of the college of nursing. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Nursing leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Nursing requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires certification as a registered nurse. The Dean of Nursing manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Nursing typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Hartwick College, a private, residential liberal arts and sciences college located in the foothills of the Catskills Mountains in Oneonta, New York, seeks a Dean of Nursing who can provide strategic, inclusive, and collaborative leadership of the School of Nursing. This is an in-person, on-campus role.

    About the School of Nursing

    The new School of Nursing, announced in September 2023, has a long and storied history of leadership, innovation, and service in nursing education. Originally established in 1943 as a U.S. Cadet Nursing Program during World War II, today the undergraduate program has 243 students enrolled and over 1,500 alumni. Hartwick College also announced a new partnership with SUNY Oneonta, the ONE-Hart program that will allow SUNY Oneonta pre-Nursing students to transfer seamlessly into Hartwick’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program after successfully completing their first two years at SUNY Oneonta. In partnership with SUNY Oneonta and the regional Bassett Healthcare Network, Hartwick College has also launched a workforce development initiative, Bassett CARES, which aims to support recent graduates with loan repayment in exchange for full-time employment within the Bassett Healthcare Network.

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as the senior academic officer for the School of Nursing, (reporting directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost), performing a pivotal role in academic collaborations across the College.
    • Collaborate with the Office of Academic Affairs, Nursing Chair and Assistant Chair, and Nursing faculty to set strategic priorities, and develop, implement, and evaluate program goals, policies, and services for the School of Nursing that are consistent with the College mission and meet the emerging needs in Nursing and healthcare
    • Design and implement policies and procedures, recognizing the specific needs of historically marginalized groups, to ensure the academic and professional success of all students, faculty, and staff
    • Foster a culture of innovation through strategic program development,  quality improvement and research to expand the nursing program in key focus areas and support faculty in alignment with the agenda of the College and the School of Nursing
    • Collaborate with the Office of Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and the Office of Strategic Communications to develop marketing and enrollment plans for Nursing programs
    • Create and maintain the School of Nursing’s annual capital and operating budget in collaboration with the VP for AA/Provost within the expectation of financial stewardship
    • In collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness, oversee the preparation and submission of internal and external reports (ex. annual reports to the CCNE and NY State Education Department Office of the Professions)
    • Engage in community outreach; form and sustain lasting professional partnerships with relevant constituents (ex. regional hospitals and health care organizations, educational institutions, public offices and officials)
    • Facilitate cooperative working relationships with clinical placement facilities and establish innovative partnerships
    • Collaborate with the Registrar on effective scheduling matrix and classroom needs, and approve the finalized schedule of classes and faculty workload assignments
    • Oversee the recruitment and retention of qualified faculty and support staff who can effectively foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment and committed to Hartwick College’s mission and core values 
    • Mentor new faculty by facilitating their development in the faculty role, and ensure that they have access to available resources to support their success, including professional development opportunities
    • Cultivate a collegial, collaborative, diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and the community
    • Incorporate ethical principles into decision making in the role of an academic Dean
    • Foster a spirit of scholarship, inquiry, lifelong learning and innovation for self and others
    • Complete annual Nursing faculty evaluations and staff performance reviews as required by established College practice to support faculty and staff growth and development
    • Guide faculty to assure student support in compliance with American with Disabilities regulations in partnership with other campus offices
    • Work with Nursing faculty and the Office of Academic Affairs to respond to student concerns
    • Comply with all applicable College, Federal, State, local and associational regulations
    • Projects a professional image, demonstrating and communicating respect, caring, trust, compassion and empathy at all times
    • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

     

    Qualifications: Minimum requirements for this position are an earned doctorate in Nursing from an accredited college or university; a current, unencumbered RN license (or eligibility for an RN license) in New York state; at least 5 years of professional experience in academic Nursing leadership, preferably at the level of Chair or Dean; between 3-5 years of experience teaching in a baccalaureate degree program; and between 3-5 years of professional experience in a clinical Nursing setting. Board certification in Nursing Education is preferred.

    Pay Range: $115,000-130,000
