Dean of Nursing manages administrative functions of the college of nursing. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Nursing leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Nursing requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires certification as a registered nurse. The Dean of Nursing manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Nursing typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.       SUMMARY: Works with the Building Administrators, Counselors, and District Leadership to coordinate the academic and behavioral programs for the building. The Dean will provide proactive leadership to engage the students and their families, staff and the community in the delivery of programs and services to support the students’ academic, personal, and social growth.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
      • Assist the Administrative Team in implementation of a positive, rigorous, and enthusiastic climate of high expectations.
      • Assisting in the development of the School Improvement Plan.
      • Work with student services personnel from other schools to coordinate counseling, guidance, and student service efforts within the school district.
      • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
      • Creating and implementing student behavior expectations for the building, utilizing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) methods, and conflict resolution strategies.
      • Serves as resource for staff regarding effective management of student behavior.
      • Serves as resource and subject matter expert for teachers and assists with teaching strategy.
      • Assist with leading professional development for staff.
      • Knowledgeable about State Education Law and Policy affecting the management of Student Behaviors.
      • Builds positive working relationships with Students and their families, Staff, community members and local organizations.
      • Collaborate and communicate effectively with key stakeholders through a variety of methods.
      • Assist in administration of Academic Support Center.
      • Works with counselors to establish development plans for those students showing signs of academic struggle.
      • Responsible for implementing strategies that will motivate and inspire students to succeed and stay in school.
      • Coordinates implementation of parent involvement as well as school sponsored events. Assists with school-wide and event supervision. Assists in responding to school-wide emergencies.
      • Sensitive to building needs and problem areas, then brings them to the attention of building administration.
      • Serves as a resource for building staff, administrators, and parents in working with students, creating a positive school climate, and helping students develop a positive self-concept.
      • Maintains and manages Honor Roll, Student Recognition programs, and related assemblies.
      • Serve as testing coordinator for all State and Local Assessments.
      • Assist counselors and analyze test data collected, identify areas of academic deficiency and work with building administrators to develop action plans.
      • Acts as liaison between school and students, and serves as a resource for virtual program students and their families.
      • Coordinates the welcoming and orientation of incoming students.
      • Coordinates building initiatives to maintain and encourage student enrollment.
      • Regular on-site attendance and punctuality are an expectation of this position.

      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Student and student helpers.

      QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.       EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education or related field with Specific Course work related to High School Curriculum, Master’s Degree preferred. Five (5) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience of excellent quality at the secondary level preferred.

      CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate or School Counselor License required.

      LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedure, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

      MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

      REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

      OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and present lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, school staff and parents; skills in oral and written communication. Demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate, and to expedite student and staff activities.
