Dean of Sciences manages administrative functions of the college of science. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Sciences leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Sciences requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Sciences manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Sciences typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Description

    Job Summary:

    Provides leadership for specific academic program(s) through effective planning and resource management. Under administrative direction of the Provost. Responsible for academic departments/programs and for resolving issues which may occur at any time during the week.

    Education and Experience:

    • Earned doctorate in discipline related to department responsibility, curriculum and instruction, educational administration and supervision, adult education or closely related field from an accredited university; proficiency in applying advanced concepts, principles, and techniques of learning theories, educational practices and procedures.
    • Five (5) years teaching experience.
    • Five (5) years of progressive and significant educational leadership in educational program(s) or related area of practice.
    • Ability to develop, manage, promote, and evaluate academic/educational programs and staff.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Eight (8) years of progressive and significant educational leadership in educational program(s) or related area of practice.

     

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    Strategic Planning

    Assists the Provost with strategy development to achieve short term and long- term College initiatives; develops and implements division goals and initiatives; monitors and evaluates effectiveness; effects changes required for improvement.

    • Engages in the strategic planning process.
    • Utilizes internal and external trends, data etc. in the development of the college strategic plan.
    • Contributes to the overall development of the five-year plan, along with annual initiatives.
    • Facilitates the achievement of assigned initiatives/strategies.
    • Reports progress on achievements of initiatives on a regular basis.
    • Contributes to the review and update of college policies, procedures, publications, and processes annually.
    • Provides leadership in assigned College Committees.

     

    Enrollment Management and Retention

    Provides support for the enrollment management initiatives of the College and division.

    • Collaborates with VPs of Enrollment to achieve the College’s recruitment and admissions plan.
    • Contributes to the review and development of marketing materials.
    • Monitors and manages the student advising process (TUD) and/or provides training and support for Student Success Coaches (Global).

     

    Divisional Operations

    Organizes, administers, and evaluates divisional activities to create a positive learning environment according to policies and procedures of the College.

    • Monitors and manages daily operations.
    • Facilitates program development congruent with changing times in area of study.
    • Monitors compliance with college and divisional policies, procedures and external requirements.
    • Develops and updates program publications as appropriate.
    • Develops and evaluates effectiveness of class schedule and faculty assignments each term.
    • Manages contracts with external faculty and agencies (if applicable).
    • Facilitates divisional meetings, committee meetings, and task forces as assigned.
    • Develops institutional and divisional reports as needed.

     

    Learning

    Facilitates development and implementation of curricula that promote student learning outcomes that meet institutional and/or programmatic accreditation standards

    • Maintains current information in the area(s) of study/instruction.
    • Facilitates the development and implementation of curricula.
    • Monitors activities of faculty in areas of teaching, faculty engagement, advising, and learning outcomes, including both full time and part time.
    • Provides feedback to faculty concerning teaching effectiveness and professional development.
    • Maintains current information about technological and physical resources necessary to advance quality education.
    • Monitors the assessment and evaluation activities related to the attainment of student learning outcomes.

     

    Human Resources

    Administers the operational management of the division through interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating faculty and staff to promote quality instruction, satisfaction, and development.

    • Develops and creates staffing plans for programs/departments.
    • Recruits, interviews and hires faculty and staff for vacant positions.
    • Facilitates new hires orientation, onboarding to the college and division.
    • Monitors and evaluates faculty and staff performance.
    • Mentors faculty through rank promotion.
    • Fosters faculty and staff professional development.
    • Contributes to rewarding excellence in teaching, professional practice, and scholarly activity.

     

    Finance and Budget

    Prepares and administers the departmental operational/capital budget and assists with administrative decision-making and planning.

    • Creates annual operational and capital budgets.
    • Plans and monitors expenditures which support overall college goals.
    • Authorizes spending to support budget plans and goals.
    • Prepares financial reports about spending activities as required.
    • Works with the Vice President of Finance and Provost with facility and technological needs.
    • Manages payroll and hiring processes using software applications effectively.

     

    IE/Accreditation and Program Review

    Ensures compliance with external requirements including but not limited to the Association of Biblical Higher Education and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

    • Monitors compliance with external regulatory agencies.
    • Monitors effectiveness of quality program outcomes (Student Learning Outcomes, Program Outcomes, Institutional Learning Outcomes).
    • Performs and/or monitors Program Review(s) in accordance with review cycle.

     

    Other Duties as Assigned

    Performs related accountabilities/responsibilities as required or directed.
