Woodward Academy seeks a dedicated, experienced Middle School educator for the position of full-time Middle School Dean of Students. The Middle School Dean of Students’ most important responsibility will be to cultivate relationships with students, faculty, and parents, as well as support and partner with the middle school administration in assisting and handling student discipline and various administrative duties.
Reporting to the Middle School Principal, the Middle School Dean of Students is responsible for monitoring and enhancing the quality of student life in the Middle School including student-focused events and student behavior. The Dean of Students helps to foster a positive, inclusive, engaging, and caring atmosphere by providing programming and leadership opportunities that enable students to flourish. The Dean of Students works closely with the school counselors and administration in providing programming and restorative practices that embrace and teach our mission, vision, and The Woodward Way.
Responsibilities Include:
Discipline
- Implement and maintain a behavior management system that is grounded in the school’s mission and vision, using restorative justice practices when appropriate, and ensure that infractions are teachable moments.
- Work closely with the MS counselors to guide and support students towards social, emotional, and academic success.
- Oversee day-to-day disciplinary issues in the middle school, working closely with faculty to ensure compliance with school policies.
- Prepare, conduct, and communicate summaries of student behavior investigations.
- Communicate clearly and in a timely fashion, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, and administrators regarding any disciplinary event or consequence.
- Keep accurate records on disciplinary infractions and consequences, utilizing Veracross data management system.
- Manage and monitor consequences, including, but not limited to, uniform violations, reflective writings, detentions, community service, etc.
- Review the student handbook each year to ensure accurate documentation and explanation of current school policies and practices relating to discipline.
- Coordinate the implementation of the Academy Random Drug Testing protocols.
Student Life
- Develop and implement ongoing student programming that is both fun and builds community, including but not limited to current Community Time programming, advisory, clubs, and the Middle School House System.
- Design and implement a Middle School Leadership program in the upcoming years.
Other
- Represent the Middle School at parent coffees, outreach and after-school events, admissions events, communications meetings, and in various committees
- Align with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives to support students, faculty, and families
- Advocate for the social-emotional development of students, aligning with SEE Learning teacher and team leads.
- Collaborate with Deans in other buildings
- Supervise students throughout the school day
Required Skills:
- Excellent professionalism with verbal and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy
- Ability to leverage technology, including but not limited to Google Apps Suite and the Veracross Student Information System
- Strong organizational skills

Minimum Job Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Masters degree in teaching subject matter, counseling and/or educational administration preferred
- 2 years of successful middle school experience
The Dean of Students, Middle School position is a full time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Substantial benefits are available. EOE
