    Overview:

    The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for an Adult Education Instructor for Rural Students to teach our program’s adult basic education and high school equivalency (GED) rural students in the Interior and North Slope regions, providing mostly remote adult basic education and high school equivalency (GED) instruction. At the Literacy Council of Alaska, we not only offer tutoring for our students, but we also work to improve their lives, create community, and be positive mentors. Our ideal candidate is knowledgeable about Native Alaskan cultures and has experience with reading instruction. This role requires a creative approach to educating that is culturally responsive, while also ensuring students meet learning milestones. On-the-job training is available for candidates who are not prepared to teach all subjects required, with thorough training at the start.

    While traveling, the Rural Student Instructor may work outside normal business hours and work more hours than usual.

    Job Duties:

    • Instruction
    • Conduct an in-depth orientation with new students to set the expectations of the program, complete intake materials with students, and follow up
    • Assess program students using the TABE and BEST tests adhering to the State of Alaska Policy Manual
    • Create an education plan based on student intake level with the Program Director and Lead Instructor
    • Work with students to develop and pursue career and post-secondary pathways
    • Provide 1 on 1 tutoring or group workshops for students primarily over the phone or online with students living outside Fairbanks (with potential for remote work after 6 month review), and log their progress
    • Communicate at least twice a week with each student, schedule appointments, check in, and motivate them to continue
    • Tutor students in study hall as needed, at the discretion of the Program Director
    • Outreach
    • Introduce the Program Director to community partners in rural villages, including schools, Native Corporations, Village Councils, and other organizations in order to make and maintain positive relationships for the Literacy Council of Alaska
    • Work with the Program Director to plan travel to villages in the Interior and North Slope regions, both on and off the road system approximately 4-5 times a year
    • Identify barriers to student success and inform the Program Director
    • Reporting
    • Track attendance for students each week
    • Keep a written record of student contacts, progress, challenges, and goals
    • Attend weekly department meetings and collaborate with the team

    Job Skills and Qualifications:

    • Minimum of two years experience working in an educational setting
    • Experience teaching reading fundamentals or willingness to learn as part of training
    • Organized and able to work independently
    • Willing to collaborate and quick to bring up challenges
    • Able to communicate clearly both orally and in writing
    • Able to travel to remote locations by plane or by driving personal vehicle (must have a clean driving record)
    • Cultural sensitivity and experience with Alaska Native cultures
    • Must be able to pass a background check

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Has worked or volunteered with LCA for 6 months
    • Working toward or has a degree in relevant field
    • Experience working in rural Alaska

    Supervised by the Adult Education/GED Program Director

    25-30 hrs/wk @ $21/hr DOE

    LCA is an EOE
