Job Description
The Whitman Career Center is seeking an Undergraduate Career Advisor to deliver career education and professional development programming, services, and resources for undergraduate business students. The Undergraduate Career Advisor will work to understand career interests and partner in developing strategies to support internship and full-time job search for students majoring in specific business majors, in addition to working with a segment of undeclared business students.
The Undergraduate Career Advisor will have the responsibility to coordinate and manage large-scale career education programs, including career exploration events, industry-specific corporate visits and alumni networking programs. Additionally, the Undergraduate Career Advisor will have responsibility for managing critical strategic and operational components of the career center, demonstrating leadership, maturity, and thoughtfulness in doing so.
The ideal candidate will be flexible, have a positive attitude, and excel at management of self. They should also be a self-starter who evaluates student and corporate partner needs, develops strategies, and proactively takes appropriate action as a result. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills are essential to this role. Additional required talents are managerial skills, sound decision-making, high attention to detail, accountability, follow through, and being outcome oriented. This position requires the ability to work both autonomously and in collaboration with colleagues to effectively meet established goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of previous career coaching, recruiting, placement and/or project management experience preferred.
- Master’s degree highly desirable.
- Experience with the unique needs of business students helpful.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills required.
- Must have the ability to work effectively and collegially in a fast-paced environment and successfully manage multiple demands and priorities.
- Previous experience in career services advising across a diverse population of students is highly desirable.
- High capacity to meet deadlines, well-developed time management and organizational skills, follow through, and discretion in handling confidential information are required.
- Project management skills required.
- Ability and eagerness to learn new technologies desired. Intermediate level technology skills required in Excel, database management, and online platforms required.
- Ability to work occasional evening and weekends (career fairs, employer visits, events), and travel for student events and conferences.
Responsibilities
- Coaching, Advising, Teaching, and Training: Provide career counseling, advising, and coaching to global, diverse, and discerning full-time undergraduate business student population (e.g., career research, resume and cover letter writing, internship and job search strategy, interview preparation, and networking tips). Develop and implement unique career education programming for Whitman undergraduate student population with career center team while utilizing career development theories and modern methodologies. Lead one-on-one and group sessions with students to facilitate skill development and exploration of opportunities; have or gain knowledge of related industries and career paths as well as skills needed for undergraduate business students. Develop and deliver information with a teaching and learning focus in person, virtually, and through online resources based on best practices while addressing emerging student needs. Evaluate gaps in student engagement and skillsets; create and execute plans to establish connections with student population and equip students with necessary competencies.
- Outcomes and Accountability: Track, audit, and analyze internship and post-graduation placement outcomes with high attention to detail and accountability according to national reporting standards. Provide thoughtful, thorough, and timely responses and specialize in strategic, proactive outreach to all connected parties. Track, audit, and communicate critical information about the Whitman undergraduate internship degree requirement to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Operational Management: Lead and contribute to all components of the operational success of the career center and related programs, including partnering with colleagues within the career center, Whitman, and across campus.
- Innovation and Strategy: Think creatively and proactively about professional development and career search experience for students. Pilot innovative approaches for building partnerships and engaging with students and stakeholders with a mindset for understanding student needs and fields related to business industries. Demonstrate excellent analytical skills while evaluating and impacting program needs.
- Relationship Development and Employer Relations Support: Partner with corporate development and employer relations staff, along with additional staff, faculty, alumni, and students, to understand strategic recruiting and hiring needs in support of full-time employment and internship placement of full-time Whitman undergraduate students; convey this information appropriately to students and identify and recommend appropriate candidates for opportunities. Communicate student skills and interests to corporate development and employer relations staff to impact strategy in creating opportunities for students. Collaborate with faculty, alumni, students, and employers to foster relationships while building learning and recruiting opportunities for Whitman students.
