BASIC FUNCTION
I. Diagnosis of dental problems- using necessary radiographs.
2. Decay removal and restoration of teeth.
3. Prescription of appropriate pain medication and antibiotics.
4. Extraction of infected, non-restorable teeth.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Provide dental care and treatment
a. Perform comprehensive dental examinations to assess oral health, identify dental conditions, and formulate treatment plans
b. Diagnose and treat dental diseases and conditions, including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infections
c. Perform dental procedures such as fillings, extractions, root canals, and crowns

Supervise preventive and routine dental care including
a. Regular dental cleanings, scaling, and polishing to maintain oral hygiene and prevent dental problems
b. Application of fluoride treatments and dental sealants to protect teeth against decay
c. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and diet modifications

Manage dental emergencies and pain relief
a. Evaluate and provide immediate care for dental emergencies
b. Prescribe medications as necessary for pain management and infection control
c. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to address underlying medical conditions that may affect dental health

Conduct dental screenings and assessments
a. Perform oral cancer screenings
b. Evaluate dental and facial structures, including bite alignment, jaw development, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function
c. Refer patients to specialists for further evaluation and treatment of complex dental conditions or oral diseases

Educate and counsel patients
a. Provide patient education on oral health topics, including the importance of regular dental visits and preventive care
b. Explain treatment options, procedures, and expected outcomes to patients, ensuring informed decision-making
c. Offer guidance on maintaining good oral health habits and addressing specific concerns related to oral care

Maintain accurate dental records and documentation
a. Document patient encounters, treatment plans, and procedures in dental charts or electronic health record systems
b. Keep updated records of patient medical history, allergies, medications, and previous dental treatments
c. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards of patient confidentiality and record keeping
d. Timely completion and closure of charts

Collaborate with the dental team and other healthcare professionals
a. Coordinate and communicate with dental assistants, hygienists, and support staff to ensure efficient workflow and patient care
b. Collaborate with medical professionals to address oral health implications for patients with systemic conditions or special needs
c. Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, case discussions, and quality improvement initiatives

Stay abreast of dental advancements and best practices
a. Engage in continuing education programs, conferences, and professional development to enhance knowledge and skills
b. Keep up to date with emerging dental technologies, techniques, and research findings
c. Apply evidence-based practice and maintain a commitment to delivering high-quality dental care
9. Performs other duties as assigned

Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree
