Dentist examines and treats diseases and injuries of teeth and gums. Performs preventative and maintenance dentistry and educates the patient in proper tooth and gum care. Being a Dentist recommends braces or surgery to correct any malformations. Requires a doctorate degree in dentistry, either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from an accredited school. BASIC FUNCTION
I. Diagnosis of dental problems- using necessary radiographs.
2. Decay removal and restoration of teeth.
3. Prescription of appropriate pain medication and antibiotics.
4. Extraction of infected, non-restorable teeth.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Provide dental care and treatment
a. Perform comprehensive dental examinations to assess oral health, identify dental conditions, and formulate treatment plansb. Diagnose and treat dental diseases and conditions, including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infectionsc. Perform dental procedures such as fillings, extractions, root canals, and crowns- Supervise preventive and routine dental care including
a. Regular dental cleanings, scaling, and polishing to maintain oral hygiene and prevent dental problemsb. Application of fluoride treatments and dental sealants to protect teeth against decayc. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and diet modifications- Manage dental emergencies and pain relief
a. Evaluate and provide immediate care for dental emergenciesb. Prescribe medications as necessary for pain management and infection controlc. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to address underlying medical conditions that may affect dental health- Conduct dental screenings and assessments
a. Perform oral cancer screeningsb. Evaluate dental and facial structures, including bite alignment, jaw development, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) functionc. Refer patients to specialists for further evaluation and treatment of complex dental conditions or oral diseases- Educate and counsel patients
a. Provide patient education on oral health topics, including the importance of regular dental visits and preventive careb. Explain treatment options, procedures, and expected outcomes to patients, ensuring informed decision-makingc. Offer guidance on maintaining good oral health habits and addressing specific concerns related to oral care- Maintain accurate dental records and documentation
a. Document patient encounters, treatment plans, and procedures in dental charts or electronic health record systemsb. Keep updated records of patient medical history, allergies, medications, and previous dental treatmentsc. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards of patient confidentiality and record keepingd. Timely completion and closure of charts- Collaborate with the dental team and other healthcare professionals
a. Coordinate and communicate with dental assistants, hygienists, and support staff to ensure efficient workflow and patient careb. Collaborate with medical professionals to address oral health implications for patients with systemic conditions or special needsc. Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, case discussions, and quality improvement initiatives- Stay abreast of dental advancements and best practices
a. Engage in continuing education programs, conferences, and professional development to enhance knowledge and skillsb. Keep up to date with emerging dental technologies, techniques, and research findingsc. Apply evidence-based practice and maintain a commitment to delivering high-quality dental care
9. Performs other duties as assigneda. Effectively carries out task and responsibilities beyond core job duties and primary role. The additional duties may vary from time to time and encompass a wide range of activities that contribute to the overall success of the organization. (Floating, schedule variations, assisting co-workers, patients, visitors, customers, leaders, and other stakeholders in support of the organization.)
PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES- The successful candidate should have at a minimum good communication and must also meet the aptitude requirements listed in this description. Exceptional organizational skills are needed.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS- Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree
TECHNICAL SKILLS- Computer, monitor, facsimile (fax) machine, copier, telephone and other standard office equipment.
