Design Director directs and oversees CAE technical and team capability to support product, component, or structure design. Provides expertise and technical leadershipfor benchmarking, concept design, prototype development, simulation, testing protocols, and optimization utilizing CAE design and analysis techniques and tools. Being a Design Director develops and optimizes CAE methodology, including guidelines and standards, to increase design process efficiency. Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering. Additionally, Design Director typically reports to senior management. The Design Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Design Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     • Manage the design team in their efforts to produce project designs, financial estimations, and schedules for internal construction endeavors.
    • Supervise project managers that manage special projects and construction in 80 facilities citywide.
    • Create reports and presentations to showcase work that Facilities Maintenance performs.
    • Collaborate with various agency units to ensure smooth execution of construction projects.
    • Develop comprehensive cost estimates for each construction project and oversee the allocation of funds.
    • Formulate comprehensive timelines and schedules for construction projects.
    • Regularly audit the quality of work done by the construction and design teams.
    • Develop and implement strategies to optimize resource allocation.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and city codes during project execution.
    • Prepare contingency plans for potential project risks and delays.
    • Coordinate with external agencies and stakeholders as required. Develop strategies, plans and procedures to coordinate and manage design team to assure all deadlines are met to achieve organizational objectives.
    • Attend high level meetings to coordinate with other DOT units heads to resolve facility related construction and space needs.
    • Work with the Director of Capital Planning to develop schematic designs and provide technical guidance on proposed real-estate acquisitions.
    • Consult with regulatory agencies regarding interpretations for code compliance.
    • Review highly technical designs, plans, specifications and architectural/engineering drawings performed by consultants.
    • Review highly technical architectural/engineering reports and studies.
    • Provide technical assistance and recommendations to Facilities Management team
    • On an as needed basis perform site visits to projects under construction and monitor the quality of design and construction work performed by architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors
    • May supervise Facilities Maintenance Team in the absence of the Director.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qual Requirements

    A valid New York State Registration as an Architect is required. In addition, candidates must have six ( 6 ) years of full-time paid experience in architectural work, at least two (2) years of which shall have been as an administrative architect.

    Preferred Skills

    • Strong supervisory and management experience
    • Knowledge of operations, design, construction, building materials, technics and codes
    • Knowledge of current up to date engineering methods and standards
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong organizational skills
