Desktop Publishing Operator jobs in New York, NY

Flatiron Books is seeking a motivated individual for the full-time position of Publishing / Design Assistant. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the cover design process and publishing as a whole. This person would work with both the art and publishing operations departments to
coordinate with freelancers and vendors, organize meetings and share follow-ups, help with art research, and assist the publishing operations team with the seasonal publishing process. Candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills and attention to detail. Interest in jacket design a plus.

What you'll do:

• Coordinate with freelance designers and in-house contacts in marketing, audio and subrights to share final cover files and rights information
• Maintain a database of freelance contacts with up-to-date information.
• Communicate with vendors regarding agreements and invoice submissions and troubleshoot issues with vendor paperwork and invoices/ payments
• Check files from freelancers to confirm dimensions and specs
• Create jpgs of covers, upload final covers to internal systems
• Update designs and copy on backlist titles.
• Attend weekly production and jacket meetings and send out meeting agendas and minutes for bi-weekly meetings
• Follow up with editors and key people to confirm next steps on cover process
• Help with photo/art research
• Assist with seasonal planning for Flatiron books, including communicating editorial and sales deadlines to the staff.
• Monitoring internal systems to ensure title information is correct and current.
• Organize and participate in publishing and channel strategy meetings, and assisting with meeting prep and follow-up.

• Enthusiasm for books and publishing

Ideal Experience:

• Proficiency with Word, and Excel required
• Basic knowledge of graphic design fundamentals and Adobe Photoshop InDesign is a plus
• Experience with Google Suite a plus

This role will have an annual salary of $47,500.
