Public Health Educator
Grade 9, $55,135
The Onondaga County Health Department is seeking a qualified candidate to support the Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities (ATFC) program throughout the project area of Onondaga, Cayuga, and Oswego counties. ATFC works to reduce illness, disability, and death related to commercial tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, and to alleviate social and economic inequities caused by tobacco use. Initiatives will include administration of Reality Check, a program that engages youth in action-oriented activities to mitigate, reduce, and eliminate the tobacco industry's deceptive marketing practices. The Public Health Educator (Youth Action) will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and administering a youth-centered program to support the prevention and reduction of tobacco use.
Responsibilities of the Public Health Educator (Youth Action) include:
· Maintaining professional knowledge and understanding of youth-focused tobacco-related issues and of tobacco control interventions as well as the NYS Prevention Agenda;
· Actively engaging, recruiting, and supporting youth and youth-focused groups in each county to conduct community education, mobilization, and advocacy activities in support of tobacco-related policy change through regularly convened meetings;
· Facilitating continuous training, guidance, and support of Reality Check youth to build their capacity to advance tobacco control policies and initiatives, including participation in regional, statewide, and national tobacco control events;
· Building and maintaining relationships with community leaders, youth organizations and state and local elected officials, and including Reality Check youth in these interactions when feasible.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Health Science, Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health or Health Communications; or,
· Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Nursing, Epidemiology, Wellness and Fitness or Nutrition and one (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in health education; or,
· Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Human Services, Social Work or Psychology and two (2) years’ experience, or its part-time equivalent, in health education; or,
· Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Master’s degree in Public Health or Health Education.
Other Requirements: Must have a valid New York State driver’s license and vehicle or provide evidence of mobility within assigned community. The ability to attend required meetings and trainings as directed by NYSDOH is required. Local travel and overnight stays to maximize travel opportunities may be required.
Position Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. Candidates must have the ability to work flexible hours, which may include occasional evenings and weekends, to support community education events.
