Development Director manages an organization's fundraising strategies, campaigns, capital development initiatives, and operations to support the overall organizational development and revenue objectives. Implements donor stewardship programs to identify, develop, retain, and nurture a portfolio of individual and institutional donors. Being a Development Director works to develop potential corporate or governmental partnerships and grant funding opportunities. Creates collaborative coordination between staff and internal stakeholders to plan events and communications to increase donor engagement. Additionally, Development Director uses technology to manage and monitor donor information and produce data-driven measurement and reporting of the progress of fundraising goals. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Development Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Development Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

    Organizational Description

    Approaching its 70 season in 2024-25, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra is the oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra in the state of Alabama. As strong advocates for equitable access to the powerful experience of orchestral music, HSO serves north Alabama with a two-part mission of musical performance and music education. A 501(c)3 organization, it is dependent on donors and philanthropy for delivering on its mission.

    Reports to: CEO

    Liaison to: HSO Trustees

    Location: HSO Office at the Von Braun Center with option to work from home, as needed

    Hours: Exempt

    Job Summary

    The Director of Development is primarily responsible for the planning, execution, control and evaluation of all of the organization’s fund development activities. The Director of Development works closely with the CEO, the Trustees, and the Development Committee to enhance and support the overall mission of the organization and to assure that ample unrestricted and program-specific funds are secured. This leader fosters a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and creates a donor-centered organization that nurtures loyalty through a comprehensive relationship-building program including cultivation and communications. Specific activities currently include but are not limited to:

    • Designing and implementing direct-response fundraising, both mail-based and online
    • Securing annual corporate and individual sponsorships from $1,500 - $50,000 to underwrite concerts and other programs
    • Securing annual gifts from HSO Trustees
    • Identifying, writing, and submitting grant applications in partnership with the General Manager and Director of Finance
    • Ensuring proper stewardship of donors of all levels
    • Regularly reporting fundraising progress to CEO and Development Committee
    • Maintaining records of donor interactions in the customer relationship management database, currently Spektrix
    • Liaising with key volunteers from the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild to coordinate efforts related to their social fundraising events

    The individual is expected to

    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge about best practices, trends, ethics, and legal and regulatory considerations in the realm of philanthropy
    • Adhere to a high level of discretion, particularly with regard to confidential donor information
    • Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the demands of the position, to include evening and weekend work as needed
    • Convey a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the HSO and the overall nonprofit sector
    • Demonstrate commitment to continued professional growth and development
    • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Utilize common web-based office suite products – MS Office, Google Suite, Zoom, Dropbox

    Qualifications

    The position requires demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program and producing charitable contributions. The individual is expected to have demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money. A bachelor's degree is required; advanced degrees and/or a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) certification preferred.

    Salary Range

    $65,000 annually
