Development Director manages an organization's fundraising strategies, campaigns, capital development initiatives, and operations to support the overall organizational development and revenue objectives. Implements donor stewardship programs to identify, develop, retain, and nurture a portfolio of individual and institutional donors. Creates collaborative coordination between staff and internal stakeholders to plan events and communications to increase donor engagement.     Job Summary

     

    Clear Path for Veterans, Inc. (CPV or Clear Path) is a community-based organization delivering world class, holistic programs and services to veterans, service members, and military-connected families without condition. The position develops, implements and monitors a comprehensive fundraising plan to expand philanthropic support of the organization including, but not limited to, identifying and strengthening relationships with current and prospective donors; actively pursuing and managing corporate and individual leads; fostering strong donor and sponsor stewardship; organizing annual giving; cultivating and securing major gifts; planning and overseeing fundraisers; and executing a capital campaign.  The incumbent also supervises and coordinates the work of the Development Managers to build a high-functioning fund development team.  This position reports directly to the Chief Community Officer (CCO).

     

    Primary Functions

     

    Fund Development and Donor Recognition

     

    • Develop and implement a plan for innovative and effective fund development strategies.
      1. Create a standard operating procedure and train all staff as needed.
      2. Collaborate with other managers and directors to develop various teams and committees focused on a cross-functional, diversified approach to development.
      3. Develop a multi-dimensional fund development plan that leverages CPV’s position in the nonprofit space at the local, state, regional, and national level. This includes in-kind donations, on and off fundraising events, and other gifts.
    • Identify, pursue, and acquire significant donors.
      1. Monitor donor history, cultivate and document donor history and levels of donations.
      2. Assess donor trends and advise the CCO, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Board of Directors on strategy.
      3. Work with the CEO and Board of Directors to identify and foster collaborative major donor relationships.
    • Develop and assign caseloads for stewardship and cultivation to the Board of Directors, CEO, Development Managers, staff, and volunteers.
      1. Work with the Development Managers and outreach team to identify and catalog a calendar of cultivation events in which Clear Path should participate.
      2. Ensure development activity is recorded correctly in Salesforce and potential donors are identified.
    • Monitor and manage all online giving programs.
    • Manage the annual, semi-annual, and all external appeals to expand the base of individual donors.
    • Create and manage a planned giving program for the Board, staff, and all donors.
    • Maintain, review, update, and implement the gift acceptance policy to ensure it fosters a culture of gratitude and allows Clear Path to accept gifts that will be fully utilized.
    • Create, document, implement and manage an effective cycle of giving.
    • Create a donor recognition program that will encourage continued, regular donations and make Clear Path’s donors feel appreciated and valued. Monitor staff participation in doing the same.
    • Identify and engage prospect research sources to ensure effective wealth screening.

     

    Management, Teamwork, and Leadership

     

    • Provide effective leadership to the Clear Path staff regarding fundraising protocol.
      1. Coordinate and manage the efforts of Clear Path staff to identify other employees interested in assisting with fundraising efforts.
    • Work with the Communications Senior Manager to assign proper speakers for donor-related events.
    • Responsible for the effective and timely recruiting, interviewing, and assessing of fund development staff and volunteers, including collaborating with others to make the best hiring decisions.
      1. Ensure adequate time is devoted to recruiting and hiring development staff to avoid positions being left unnecessarily vacant.
    • Effectively evaluate the performance, skills, and professional development needs of fund development staff and volunteers to include a regular schedule of formal performance evaluations and training.

     

    Administrative and Miscellaneous

     

    • Work with the CEO, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Program Officer (CPO), and CCO to create an annual organizational budget.
      1. Manage and monitor budget monthly, being prepared to explain variances.
    • Assist with creating and disseminating an annual report including but not limited to financials and donor giving levels.
    • Create and implement direct mailing campaigns as needed.
    • Attend Board of Director meetings, as requested.
    • Attend and actively participate in staff and other meetings as needed.
    • Analyze monthly and historical receipts.
    • Create reports summarizing donor activity and donations for executive staff, program directors/managers, and outreach to review when appropriate.
    • Attend training and educational sessions, webinars, and reading, and do the research necessary to apply effective fundraising techniques.
    • Ensure a PR and Marketing strategy aligns with CPV fund development.
    • Complete other related duties as assigned.

     

    Education and Experience Requirements

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, OR a minimum of eight (8) years of work experience in fund development OR a combination of experience and education required.
    • Three (3) years (minimum) of supervisory experience required.
    • Experienced in building long-term, productive relationships with donors and philanthropic institutions.
    • Proven track record of creating and executing effective fundraising strategies for diverse revenue streams, with success in soliciting and closing 6 and 7-figure gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations.
    • Demonstrated success raising $2M (minimum) annually
    • Supervisory and managerial experience with diverse teams.
    • Experience working with or maintaining extended associations with veterans preferred.

    Additional Requirements

     

    • May be required to work weekends and evenings as needed. 
    • Participate in special events as required.

     

    Work Location

     

    Work locations will vary depending on day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.  Working remotely/hybrid may be required to increase efficiency and not impede on day-to-day operations.

    Must possess speech and hearing sufficient for telephone and in-person communications.  Manual dexterity is sufficient for constant use of computer keyboard and other office equipment.  Vision sufficient for frequent use of a computer monitor, developing and reading paperwork.  Must be able to stand and be actively mobile for extended periods of time, including bending, stooping, reaching, running, balancing, etc.  Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
