  • Location: Altru Hospital 1200 S.Columbia Rd. Grand Forks, ND 58201 Pay Range: $20.75 - $31.12 Summary: Schedule: 40 hours per week, hours between 4:00am - 5:00pm. Weekends as needed. The Phlebotomy Educator collects (capillary and venipuncture) blood specimens from patients of all ages, assists patients with non-blood collections, and is responsible for specimen integrity through the accuracy of patient identification, specimen labeling, collection steps, and specimen transport. This position performs occasional point-of-care patient testing such as glucose. The Phlebotomy Educator provides exceptional customer service. The Phlebotomy Educator is responsible for onboarding and training new phlebotomy staff. The Educator will act as a resource to department staff, The Educator will ensure proper training, schedule, and orientation takes place with all new employees. They will update policies and procedures to reflect changes in phlebotomy collections. The Educator will assist the supervisor in promoting continuous improvement in the department, will engage employees to become better phlebotomists, and will work to continually improve the quality of service our phlebotomy team provides to our patients. Essential Job Functions: Performs patient identification and specimen labeling according to standard operating procedures. Understands phlebotomy processes and techniques in order to obtain quality blood specimens to ensure that correct decisions are made regarding specimen collection. Performs, interprets and reports point-of-care testing (e.g. glucose) and quality control. Processes laboratory and patient reports according to standard operating procedure, e.g. printing, recording, distributing, faxing, filing, and retrieving. Recognizes problems, takes appropriate action, documents problems and corrective action, and follows protocol to notify the Supervisor of problems in a timely manner so as not to jeopardize patient care. Actively communicates throughout the shift and manages priority requests in a courteous and timely manner to ensure effective department workflow. Follows up with STAT, ASAP, and Pre-op draws to ensure turnaround times are met. Demonstrates competence in work assignment. Will work on average 60% of FTE per week as a phlebotomist. Onboards, schedules and trains all new employees. Employee will work 40% of FTE per week educating and training new employees. Completes new employee checklists and competency assessment accurately and within established timelines. Monitors phlebotomy services for efficiency and accuracy by initiating restructure of current procedures and services. Updates procedures and works with the supervisor to educate staff on department changes. Ensures section compliance with all applicable regulatory agency standards.
