Diabetes Educator educates patients on the necessary lifestyle changes involved in a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity and glucose testing. Collects patient data to monitor health status and proactively manage the patient's condition. Being a Diabetes Educator facilitates skill development and behavior modification so that the patient is able to successfully manage the disease. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Diabetes Educator typically required to be a Certified Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Diabetes Educator occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Duties
    The Nutrition Educator provides state of the art medical nutrition therapy and diabetes education in a variety of settings to patients and their families/care partners, helping to optimize diabetes management. The Educator participates in the development of educational materials and serves as a resource for quality diabetes and nutrition information for patients and other health care team members. The Educator also uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patients age specific needs and age specific treatment and care.

    Qualifications

    Education Requirements

    • B.S. Degree in Nutrition or a related field.
    • Registered Dietitian with the ADA.
    • CDE or CDE eligible or BC-ADM.

    Minimum Requirements

    • 1 year experience in diabetes nutrition or 3 years of education and counseling of patients with chronic disease.
    • Demonstrated competence in written and oral communication skills to individuals and groups.
    • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
    • Excellent organization skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Participation in local and national diabetes organizations.
    • Experience in a community health or ambulatory setting.
