Diesel Mechanic performs inspection, maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of diesel engines. Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems. Being a Diesel Mechanic utilizes computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes. Replaces and/or refurbishes parts. Additionally, Diesel Mechanic maintains maintenance logs according to requirements. Ensures services provided follow all quality standards and safety procedures. May perform DOT annual inspections on vehicles. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Class A. Typically requires a Certificate in Automotive & Diesel Technology. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Diesel Mechanic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. We are currently seeking a Diesel Mechanic for one of our Bakersfield Divisions.

    Diesel Mechanic

    Under limited supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; performs related work as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    • Perform regular maintenance and inspections on waste management vehicles and equipment to ensure optimal functionality and safety
    • Respond to road calls and perform other duties as assigned by shop supervisor
    • Diagnose mechanical issues, troubleshoot problems, and perform necessary repairs on hydraulic systems, engines, transmissions, brakes, and other components
    • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication to minimize downtime and prevent equipment failures
    • Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic system malfunctions
    • Keep accurate records of maintenance and repair activities, including parts inventory and work performed
    • Collaborate with other team members and supervisors to prioritize tasks and ensure efficient operations
    • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working on machinery and vehicles, following proper procedures to minimize risks and accidents
    • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior mechanics or apprentices as required

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
    • Diagnosing mechanical problems and performing repairs. Safety practices and procedures.

    Working knowledge of:

    • Mechanical design and fabrication.
    • Electrical systems, including computerized induction/ignition systems.

    Skill in:

    • Use of power and hand tools.
    • Use of diagnostic equipment.
    • Acetylene and electric arc welding.
    • Operation of vehicles and equipment for diagnostic purposes.

    Ability to:

    • Work varying shifts, weekends and holidays.
    • Diagnose problems and make repairs in the field on a 24-hour basis.
    • Effectively handle lifting of various objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
    • Work extended hours out of doors in a variety of weather conditions.
    • Prepare and maintain records and reports.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
    • Follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturers’ service specifications.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Within the last 10 years, five years of experience and/or training in vehicle/construction equipment repair and maintenance shop.
    • Experience with International, Cummins, CNG / LNG and / or Diesel engines or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position
    • Valid California Driver's License and clean driving record, required

    PHYSICAL:

    • Be able to perform heavy lifting up to 75lbs.
    • Physically demanding.
    • Work overhead and underneath equipment.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Will be exposed to outdoor weather heat, cold, rain, wind.
    • Will be exposed to moderate levels of noise and dust.
