    Duties

    Supports the overall mission of the Health Services Division by providing comprehensive nutrition care and treatment through an interdisciplinary team approach to patients designated as medical and mental health, under the direction of the Health Services Administrator (HSA) or Food Service Administrator (FSA).

    Shares the responsibilities for the administration, management, and direction of the institution’s medical diet program. Interprets the medical diet program, recommends changes to the FSA, and disseminates information concerning the program.

    Responsible for developing, planning, directing, and coordinating dietetic services at the institutional level with focus on the local medical mission and management of chronic health care.

    Coordinates nutritional care with other health care providers; provides consultation to institutional health services staff, physicians, and patients concerning diet and nutrition; and provides expertise in a wide range of disease states including those with complex medical and nutritional needs.

    Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

    To be considered for the position, you must meet ONE of the following requirements for all grade levels:

    Basic Requirements:
    Education:
    Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics(AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.

    OR

    Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.

    OR

    Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

    Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

    Graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

    Experience:
    You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position.

    Some examples of this qualifying experience are:
    Experience in monitoring the health and dietary needs of patients, recommending adjustments, and disseminating information regarding a medical diet program.
    Experience in performing nutritional screenings, assessments, developing individual plans and providing dietary counseling.
    Experience in conducting quality control and quality assurance to verify adherence to food service standards.
    Experience in developing policies and procedures for administering a nutrition and dietary program.

    Combination of Education & Experience:
    Have a combination of education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position.

    Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.

    All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

    The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

    Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
