Digital Collection Librarian maintains a library's digital collection of books, serials, documents, audiovisuals, or other materials, and assists groups and individuals in locating, obtaining and using materials. Trains others in the creation or preservation of digital resources and the use of the library's digital system(s). Being a Digital Collection Librarian is responsible for the library's open source projects and procures licenses for digital content. Interacts with IT staff in selecting/developing, implementing and maintaining the library's technical infrastructure. Additionally, Digital Collection Librarian requires a master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school in a related field. Typically reports to a director. The Digital Collection Librarian manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Digital Collection Librarian typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • Actively supports and upholds the City’s stated mission and values. Under direct supervision of the Library Supervisor, employees of this classification perform day-to-day operations and lead worker responsibilities associated with an assigned library area.

     

    ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

    • Supervisory:  This job has lead worker responsibilities (provides training and guidance to others) but does not supervise. Provides input on performance evaluations.
    • Budgetary:  This job has partial responsibility for budgeting at the program level including managing grant spending and activities.
    • Strategic Planning:  This job has partial responsibility for strategic planning at the program level including assessing community needs and recommending goals and objectives to the Library Supervisor.
    • Policies/Procedures:  This job has partial responsibility for policies and procedures at the program level including providing input on development, implementation, and interpretation.
    • Compliance:  This job has partial responsibility at the program level for ensuring compliance with procedures from the City of Flagstaff, the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library and others as determined by the Library Supervisor.
    • Council Communications:  This job has partial responsibility for Council communication at the program level including making presentations regarding programs and/or grants.
    • Reporting:  This job has partial responsibility for reporting at the program level including providing information on programming, grants, volunteer hours, and social media.

    EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

    • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
    • Assists patrons with questions, computer issues, and research.
    • May act as Library Supervisor as required. 
    • Maintains and distributes community information.
    • Takes the lead role on more complex issues.
    • Selects and deselects materials (assesses library’s needs and orders appropriate materials).
    • Assists patrons and staff with technology and works to identify and evaluate new and emerging technologies as they relate to the library. 
    • May maintain specific portions of the library’s website.
    • Plans, develops, and prepares programming (may include offsite programming) including scheduling venue, preparing appropriate content, leading the program or booking and vetting the presenter, creating flyers or other promotional items, purchasing appropriate materials, and hosting programs. 
    • Actively seeks program presenters, community partners and exhibitors for the library. 
    • Researches, writes and acquires grants to support the library. Maintains statistics and post reports.
    • Prepares book displays and public service announcements.
    • Maintains statistics on reference, programming, outreach, and volunteer hours.
    • Provides reference assistance to all patrons, including assisting customers with the effective use of the library online catalog, online subscription databases, navigating the internet, locating reference and circulating materials, and providing suggestions for recreational and educational reading.
    • Participates in local and statewide workshops, seminars, and committee meetings, as required.
    • Makes presentations to library and community groups, including information about library services and programs. 
    • Assists with emergency problems as established by library policy and procedures, including building malfunctions, building evacuations, medical emergencies, and patron behavior issues involving the police. Handles emergencies and difficult situations.
    • Provides work direction and assists in training other staff, including temporary employees, volunteers, and student interns.
    • Attends and participates in department and other library meetings when appropriate, contributing ideas and expertise toward meeting goals and objects of the department and the library.
    • Prepares and submits narrative and statistical reports as assigned. 
    • Periodically serves as building supervisor on evenings and weekends.
    • Other duties as assigned.

       

    Bookmobile Librarian

    • Drives bookmobile to designated locations throughout Coconino County.
    • Assists with planning Bookmobile operations to include: scheduling stops; collection development and maintenance; grant writing and implementation; and development of Bookmobile policies and procedures. 
    • Tracks overdue notices and related billing as required.
    • Assesses needs and develops programming.
    • Maintains statistics.
    • Performs Outreach including creating program flyers and PSAs and delivering them to appropriate media outlets and City and County contacts.
    • Performs all circulation functions including checking materials in and out, registering patrons for borrower cards, and keeping appropriate statistics.
    • Assists patrons in locating materials, information, and interpreting library policies and procedures.
    • Reports vehicle maintenance issues and coordinates repairs with City Fleet Services.  

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or related field.
    • Two years of progressively responsible public library work.
    • One year of experience working with library-related technology and online resources, including library circulation software.
    • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements. 

     

    DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

    • Master’s Degree in Library Science.
    • Three years of progressively responsible public library work.
    • Knowledge about the local community and its resources.
    • Knowledge of and experience with collection development/maintenance.
    • Experience talking about library services to groups. 
    • Experience planning, developing, and preparing library programming.
    • Experience in early childhood education, storytimes particularly for ages birth through 5 years, ability to offer bilingual storytimes a plus (PALSmobile Librarian only).
    • Fluency in a language other than English, particularly Dine, Hopi, and/or Spanish.

     

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license.
    • Weekend and evening work.
    • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.


    Bookmobile Librarian

    • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license.  Additionally, a CDL Type B license is required within six months of employment. Good driving skills and safe driving record are imperative. Basic mechanical knowledge is necessary.
    • Incumbents of this position are subject to pre-employment drug screening, post-employment random drug/alcohol screening, post-accident screening, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screening.


    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

    • Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
    • Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
    • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands or fingers to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and occasionally required to climb or balance, taste or smell. 
    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Working conditions include occasional exposure to work near moving mechanical parts.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
