Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Director of Residential Education Services is responsible for the overall administration of a comprehensive Residential Education program. Through the supervision of House Advisors, the Director will provide oversight and leadership to establish an atmosphere conducive to living the mission of Vassar College. The Director of Residential Education will work collaboratively with various campus constituents on programs related and essential to the residential house model. This is a live-on position.
LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGIC PLANNING
- Guide the vision for student support, community development and resource delivery in the residential Houses and apartment areas.
- Manage the design of a renewed professional staff structure.
- Work with Residential Operations and Facilities Operations to better understand building/renovation considerations.
- Develop and lead strategic planning activities and implementation for the Residential Education. Convey and facilitate strategic changes within in area and for the departments.
- Ensure integration of Residential Education efforts with those of other complimentary Dean of College Areas including but not limited to Dean of Studies/First Year, First Year Experience, Student Growth and Engagement, Career Development, Health and Advocacy, and Student Conduct.
- Serve on College wide committees as needed.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
- Help oversee and create a positive and cohesive residential program that supports interpersonal development, health promotion, and programming.
- Lead weekly Residential Education team meetings and maintain weekly one-on-ones with each house advisor.
- Assist with the House Fellow program and serve as the liaison to the program as needed.
- Provide direction for bi-annual student fellow and house team training series.
- Center inclusive and equitable practices with students and campus partners.
STUDENT AND EMERGENCY SUPPORT
- Serve as (Back-up) Administrator on-Call.
- Support to House Advisors with the Student Support Network and the Administrator-on-Call (AOC) system including scheduling.
- Serve on Student Support Network (Behavioral Intervention Team).
TEAM MANAGEMENT
- Make recommendations to Associate Dean of the College, Student Living and Wellness, in the formulation of department budget allocations.
- Forecast and manage resources and budget for Residential Education.
- Oversee major maintenance planning, requests, allocations, expenditures and reconciliations for the functional areas of responsibility (primarily house fellows and advisors).
- Manage performance of house advisors by setting expectations and goals, monitoring progress, and providing feedback and accountability.
- Oversee the management of recruitment, hiring, training, and performance improvement of all house team members (professional and student) within the residential education area.
- Oversee the development, communication and implementation of house advisor performance and evaluation standards.
- Consult with human resources as needed regarding concerns and compliance.

- Expertise in conflict resolution and mediation and capacity to address nuanced problems with sensitivity and sound judgement.
- Experience teaching and ability to implement training.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to form and maintain cooperative working rapports with students, staff, faculty and administrators of various social, cultural and educational backgrounds.
Qualifications:
- Masters degree in student development, higher education, or related field.
- 3-5 years of residential life and student affairs professional experience.
