Detailed Job Description
Leadership and Supervision
-
Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, mentorship and supervision of the International Student Advisors
-
Serve as a resource for campus partners who support international students and scholars
- Oversee management of F-1 employment and J-1 scholar cases.

Monitor changes in relevant federal regulations & developments in the field of international education, and share findings with colleagues.
Operational Oversight
-
Advise students and scholars on their immigration status and provide cultural adjustment advising/support.

Process the full range of requests related to F-1 and J-1 compliance with the regulations of USCIS (US Citizenship & Immigration Services) and DOS (Department of State) to facilitate admission, employment, international travel, etc.

Petition government agencies on behalf of international students and scholars for matters of F-1/J-1 status.

Assist students and scholars through direct support & general information/referrals for matters related to academics, career, finances, housing, consumer issues, and cross-cultural adjustment. Refer to legal representation when necessary.

Respond to after-hours emergencies (ex. hospitalization, detention at US border, etc.) in coordination with the director.
Student Orientation (ISO)

Oversee the management and program design for International Student Orientation
-
Select, train and supervise ~30 Peer Advisor Leaders and organize ISO to facilitate successful transition/integration of new students into the campus and educate students on compliance with all relevant immigration regulations, and any university requirements unique to international students.

Develop & deliver ongoing workshops that support international student learning on immigration & employment regulations, and transition/adjustment presentations year round.

Work in collaboration with New Student Orientation and Graduate Student Orientation in developing a comprehensive orientation program for students.
Serve as ISS liaison to on- and off-campus partners (as assigned)

Provide occasional cross-cultural training to university colleagues.

Communicate with academic and support service departments in matters pertaining to international students, including providing advice and resources for international trends/concerns.

Serve as lead on partner-related processing streams (e.g. with Social Security Administration, NTID, RIT Global).
Advise international/cultural student clubs.
Participate in ongoing professional development and/or serve on division & university committees, task forces & projects.
Department/College Description
Minimum Qualifications
Immigration Status: Must hold U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residency, as this is a federal requirement to serve as a Designated School Official (for US Citizenship & Immigration Services), and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (for US Department of State).
Education/Expeience:
- Masters degree required. (Preferably in International Studies, Intercultural Communication, Counseling, Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration, or related field.)

3-5 years of experience working in the field of international education with increasing responsibilities.
Skills:
-
Advanced knowledge of F-1 student & J-1 student/scholar immigration regulations.
-
Demonstrated ability to work with non-native English speakers and others in adjusting to a U.S. university and American culture.

Experience using technology and systems to support administrative, operation and program functions.
-
Familiarity with SIS, Oracle, the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and immigration batching software (preferred).

Highly effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse and multicultural audiences.

Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or a willingness to learn.

Ability to manage and maintain confidential & private information and records, and to protect that information appropriately.

Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals.
