LAKE RIDGE HEAD START Education/Disability Coordinator
(Full-Time Position)
Reports to Director of Programs
Position Description:
The Education/Disability Coordinator must be able to provide teaching staff working with children ages three to five, support in the delivery of high-quality education services in the Head Start Program, and to comply with State Licensing and Federal Performance Standards. The individual must also be able to provide ongoing instruction and support to staff in the development of skills as identified in their perspective NAEYC, State Licensing, Paths to Quality, the CLASS Domains, and the Head Start Framework.
The Education/Disability Coordinator will be responsible for providing coaching/mentoring opportunities to support all learners in the classroom environment, which may include working one on one with students. The Education/Disability Coordinator will also conduct trainings on curriculum, screenings, and assessments. They will also oversee the management of the educational resource room and provide classrooms with materials to support curriculum studies.
This position requires a high level of organization and communication skills to assure adaptations are made to accommodate identified needs of children with disabilities and/or children with challenging behaviors as well as their parents. The Education/Disability Coordinator is expected to make decisions regarding the adaptations for children within the classroom based on the screenings (DECA and DIAL-4 ) as well as on going classroom observations, teacher referrals, or parent requests within his/her area of expertise and job description. This position will support instructional staff experiencing challenges with children using Conscious Discipline techniques and strategies to improve child social-emotional growth and classroom management
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide support to the education component for Head Start staff
Assist Instructional Staff in utilizing observations for individualization
Assist Instructional staff in using screenings and assessments for identification of children needing further evaluation.
Assist Director of Programs ensuring the Educational, Disability and Mental Health Procedural guides are update annually to reflect current practices and procedures.
Keep documentation of agendas from monthly scheduled team/collaboration meetings attended.
Offer resources and strategies to instructional staff to enhance relationships, create appropriate environments.
Review lesson plans in collaboration with Director of Programs for approval.
Review classroom assessment data two weeks after checkpoint to support increase of child outcomes
Maintain complete and accurate records of data related education and assessments.
Supports education program recordkeeping that pertains to screening and assessment data
Support instructional staff to assess strengths and needs in an effective instruction and practice. Observe current practice and offer constructive written feedback to instructional staff
Model strategies to engage children in purposeful interaction to increase cognitive and language development.
Conducts assessment focused coaching for instructional staff
Maintain accurate CLASS data collection (i.e. calculation, written evaluations)
Work collaboratively and implement the CLASS observation schedule
Review CLASS scores with Director of Program
Support the classrooms with materials and resource Area that can enhance their curriculum studies and practices
Conduct professional development trainings as it relates to Education (specific functions)
Assist with program-sponsored assessments (Self-Assessment, Community Assessment) (specific functions)
Review and monitor weekly Teaching Strategies GOLD documentation, use as discussion for coaching
Monitor all MyHeadStart Education data requirements (Parent Teacher Conference, Screening Data, Home Visit Report, Disability Referrals etc )
Assures Head Start program compliance with applicable standards that impact component areas (Disability Services and Mental Health).
Reviewing goals of the IFSPs/IEPs/Positive Guidance Plans for each child with an identified disability/and or challenging behavior.
Consult with instructional staff and assist with accommodations needed to ensure child’s participation in classroom activities
Review lesson plans to ensure alignment with Individualized Planning and child’s IEP.
Articulate information about children to school personal and demonstrate ability to make appropriate educational choices for children with special needs.
Coordinate with classroom teams including Director of Programs and other component staff (BHS) and parents in developing an IEP or Positive Guidance Plan for each child with a disability and/or challenging behaviors
Knowledge of applicable standards including American Disabilities Act (ADA), Head Start Standards
State licensing standards, Creative Curriculum, Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
Deveraux Early Childhood Assessment Dial 4 Screenings and Conscious Discipline

Professional Development experience and/or Coaching experience preferred
- Minimum of BA Degree in Early Childhood Education; Master’s preferred
- 8-10 years Early Childhood classroom experience
- CLASS Reliable preferred (must obtain within 1 year after hire)
- Teaching Strategies Interrater Reliability Certificate
- Spanish as first or second language would be helpful.
- Must be physically active and able to lead children in physical activities that promote good gross motor skills.
- Must show documentation of COVID vaccine and or submit request medical/religious exemption.
Other Duties:
The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach; bend; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit.
This position must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
This position must be able to work with all individuals in a positive manner and must be familiar with stress management and conflict resolution techniques. Must be able to tolerate a high degree of stress and have the physical agility and emotional stamina to respond quickly, appropriately, and effectively to emergency situations.
