Dispatcher coordinates drivers and vehicles to convey freight or passengers to assigned destinations in a timely and efficient manner. Maintains contact with drivers to communicate updates, delays, or special instructions and relay delivery status to customers. Being a Dispatcher records driver assignments, delivery time, and other transportation data in a computer database to track metrics. Ensures drivers are compliant with all DOT, state, local, and company regulations. Additionally, Dispatcher requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. Receives training in operation of radio, teletype, computer, recorder, fax machine, copy machine, alarm systems and related equipment.
Answers incoming phone calls, 911 calls and alarms and ascertains nature of problem and its location; dispatches necessary personnel, including ambulance, fire and public works crews and equipment according to established procedures.
Maintains dispatch and radio communications system. Monitors status and location of personnel and equipment; maintains records according to established methods and procedures.
Processes reports, records and citations from primary sources on all incoming calls; routes to appropriate personnel or file; maintains file of all records in order to keep an accurate account of all activities; enters reports into computer.
Operates teletype to obtain various types of information for use by law enforcement personnel.
Performs public contact work over counter, answering inquiries and taking actions according to prescribed methods in referring individual to appropriate personnel.
Confers with supervisor(s) on a regular basis, discussing work processes, incidents, problems and plans, receives advice, counseling and instructions.
MINOR TASKS:
Collects money for traffic fines, bond, bail and forfeitures.
Prepares monthly statistical reports of all department activities (offense, arrests).
Assists in training of new personnel in the use of communication equipment, record keeping systems, reference material, city geography and related skills.
Attends training sessions to keep abreast of current trends in the field (minimum 20 hours, every 2 years).
Cleans work area during or at end of shift.
Works on special projects as assigned; performs public relations function.
