Distance Learning and Education Director manages administrative functions of the distance learning program. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting.     Plato Learning operates outdoor mythology-based camps for kids ages 7-15. They create a world where monsters, myth, and magic transport kids out of the mortal realm into one where they are empowered to develop new skills, take risks, solve problems, and ultimately become Heroes. With seventeen locations spanning from NYC to California, Plato Learning uses actors, live-action role-play, and physically and mentally engaging activities to bring myths to life.

    Camp Mythik is Plato Learning’s first overnight camp! Demigod Campers who are rising 5th-10th graders will enjoy a week of adventure, creation, and storytelling at our Cold Spring, NY site. We are looking for an Assistant Camp Director with compassion and understanding for the behavioral needs of middle schoolers–they are navigating and their relationship with the world, history, politics, gender, sexuality, and building their opinions and values.

    Job Summary:

    We are hiring an energetic and creative leader to serve as Assistant Camp Director at our sleepaway camp location. Camp Directors are responsible for creating engaging environments for campers to explore their love of stories and adventure using Plato Learning’s play-based literacy model. They guide the experience alongside their Camp Director and Leadership Team and Counselors to keep Camp running at its full potential, and set a heroic example for their staff through service-leadership. Assistant Camp Directors also support the healthy relationships with our parents and facilities, juggling the needs of many, while keeping the camper and staff experience as their top priorities

    Job Responsibilities

    Guide the Camper, Staff, and Parent Experience.

    • Assist the Camp Director in maintaining standards for self expression and community well-being that define our camp’s environment and culture.
    • Elevate and implement camp programming with classic camp materials to meet our mythological and fantastical themes.
    • Encourage physical, intellectual, and social-emotional growth for our campers, while also adhering to Plato Learning’s safety policies and procedures.
    • Help to develop staff’s resilience and programming knowledge through training that allows them to develop the growth of our campers.
    • Provide on-going informal guidance and mentorship that supports staff as leaders in the camp space, and coach staff on camper supervision and active engagement.
    • Manage nightly mass email and photo communications to include parents that include them in the experience.
    • Manage the schedule of the Media Capture Counselor who is responsible for gathering photos and video of camp magic and sharing with parents.

    Lead The Team.

    • Under the leadership of your Camp Director, help coordinate responsibilities with your Operations Coordinator, Quest Guide, and Leadership team.
    • Provide mentorship, support and coaching to 18 staff including, Counselors and early-career professionals.
    • Promote consensus and harmony between all staff and campers, by saying “yes, and” to decisions that further the Camp’s well-being, and commit to their success.
    • Delegate and work together to keep Camp running smoothly, as you help each position flourish and successfully complete their duties.
    • Maintain and coordinate Mythik’s relationship with TOEC facilities and onsite staff with grace

    • We are looking for courageous individuals who can lean into the challenges presented by our energetic mostly-outdoor environment.
    • Leadership staff are the first people our Demigods and Counselors look to in times of challenge and uncertainty, we are looking for courageous individuals excited by the discomfort in adventure, and who do not shy away from responsibility, in the rain or heat of summer.
    • A Camp Mythik Assistant Director will spend most of their day on their feet and walk anywhere from 20,000-25,000 steps/day on the job, across varying terrain at the Taconic Outdoor Education Center.

    The Hours.

    • Approx 4-6 hours of self-paced Training
    • Attend a 25 hour In-Person Training, the days before program start date
    • 3 Weeks in-person at your camp location (our program runs on a 6 day on, 1 day off schedule with rotational nights off weekly).
    • Camp Day Schedule: 7:30am-10:30pm; Monday-Saturday morning, which includes personal breaks
    • Housing is provided for the entirety of the program, all meals are provided from Monday breakfast - Saturday breakfast.
    • Camp operates three weeks, from June 19th-July 14th

    What skills are we looking for?

    • Camp experience required, overnight experience preferred
    • Experience with children in 5th-10th grades
    • Experience in leadership such as: setting and maintaining standards for high performance, inspiring others, and delegating responsibilities.
    • Strong conflict resolution, communication, and problem-solving abilities
    • Excitement about working in an outdoor fast-paced environment in the summer
    • Ability to maintain stamina and endurance over the course of the Camp Season
    • Full program availability June 17th-July 13th. Due to the nature of staffing sleepaway camp, we are unable to accommodate in-season conflicts.

    Benefits and Compensation:

    • Compensation. $875/week for the Camp program. This includes:
    • During Staff Training days: 20-25 hours for your program (at $17/hr)
    • Referral Bonus: $50 bonus for any referred applicants who are hired for a seasonal position, paid at the end of the season
