Ascend is searching for an Operations Director for our Decatur Plant, located in the greater Huntsville, Alabama area. The Operations Director has specific accountability to drive excellence in all manufacturing units with particular focus on Environmental Safety Security and Health (ESSH), People Development, Quality, Productivity, and right cost. He/she must exhibit Ascend’s leadership behaviors and communication skills to create alignment across site and a highly engaged work environment that is committed to family first. Additionally, he/she will have significant reasoning capability and the ability to apply sound logic and judgment to problem solving. He/she must demonstrate understanding and practical execution of Ascend to Entitlement (A2E) concepts and provide direction to implement these principles in the units. TARGETED OUTCOMES Foster a culture of continuous improvement through A2E, focusing on safety, engagement, morale, quality, productivity, and cost. Deliver Annual Operating Plan (AOP) results in assigned areas of responsibility and ensure that operating discipline is part of daily execution. Identify, assess and develop talent, address talent gaps within the team and create a long-term plan to close these gaps. Particular emphasis on expectations, accountability and development for operations leaders. Develop and implement a multi-year strategic long range plan for each manufacturing unit. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure all regulatory and corporate requirements – this includes, but is not limited to ESSH core practices, environmental compliance, ISO 9001 and RC 14000 compliance Deliver and maintain superior safety and environmental performance measured by lagging indicators (first aids, recordable injuries, near misses) and leading indicators (employee engagement, leadership audits, permit compliance, hazard recognitions, etc.) across the site Provide leadership to ensure employees have the resources and direction to do their jobs Establish clear objectives for each position, communicate them to the leaders/employees and provide opportunities for continuous dialogue and feedback on performance and development. Encourage team work to drive department performance and maintain a respective work place Communicate overall direction and plant initiatives using effective communication tools and practices Provide development opportunities for all salaried and hourly employees using individual development plans. Ensure resources are available to provide a productive, smooth operation. Continuously improve productivity, reduce waste and energy, and utilize Lean Manufacturing concepts and processes across the organization. Deliver AOP commitments and coordinate AOP changes, impact and mitigating solutions to site leadership. Supply support to meet manufacturing and quality targets, prioritizing maintenance to achieve targeted OEE metrics, drive quality performance throughout the manufacturing units to reach all quality metrics. Achieve cost reduction targets through continuous improvement activities (A2E), yield and usage improvements and conversion cost reductions Have complete knowledge of the cost drivers for the manufacturing units and is accountable for meeting budgeted and forecasted cost targets Provide leadership and coaching to leaders and employees through a shared vision for the operations. Develops an understanding of the current state, the desired future state, develops and executes plans and strategies to close the gaps. Direct and indirect accountability for salary and hourly employees, including development roles/responsibilities/expectations, performance reviews and compensation evaluations for each individual employee Participate in resource planning, recruiting and champions’ employee development programs; identify and evaluate potential staff to execute projects. Effectively communicate (verbal and written) to peers, guest companies, executives and customers, and facilitates communications across the Company; coaches and mentors others to develop these skills. Support strategic business planning and growth strategy in coordination with the senior leadership. Lead all aspects of operations and manage the overall financial performance of the units Serve as a communication channel to share the best practices that will enable growth. TEAM Reports to: Sr. Site Director Team Members: SLT members Direct reports: all operations managers in above mentioned units REQUIRED EXPERIENCE Minimum of 10 years of Plant/Operations Management experience within the chemical manufacturing industry, to include: production, maintenance, scheduling, and/or shipping departments Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, MBA or similar Master’s Degree a plus. Experience with multi-plant site with customers on-site. Has led and worked in zero incident safety culture and understands important cultural elements required. Extensive experience and knowledge of Process Safety Management regulations and practices as well as environmental safety and health policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations in chemical manufacturing. Training in Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing processes, prefer green belt or black belt certification REQUIRED SKILLS & BEHAVIORS Agility, resilience and tolerance for ambiguity and change in fast-paced, collaborative environment.
