    POSITION SNAPSHOT

    The Underground Construction Technician III is a proficient, advanced-level professional in the field of underground construction. With a minimum of 2 years of industry experience, they possess substantial knowledge acquired through on-the-job experience and relevant training. Their skill set includes proficiency in either operating a directional drill or locating for the directional drill, in addition to handling support equipment like mini excavators or hydrovacs. They have a solid understanding of job site functions, can read construction designs and assist in planning jobs, and are skilled in installing structures and completing surface restoration tasks.

    While not required to mentor new employees as extensively as a level IV technician, the Underground Construction Technician III is still expected to support their team and help less experienced colleagues when necessary.

    YOUR ROLE IN ACTION

    • Attend Company Safety Meetings and Adherence to Safety Procedures: Attend company safety meetings and adhere to prescribed safety procedures, using appropriate safety equipment.
    • Perform General Site Tasks: Perform general site tasks, including the operation of hand tools, power tools, hand digging, and restoration tasks.
    • Utility Management: Locate, pothole, and verify utilities to mitigate risks during installation processes; ensure public safety and the protection of underground utilities. Has experience utilizing a Utility Locator to confirm underground utilities and services.
    • Install Structures: Install structures such as handholes, pedestals, and manholes.
    • Manual Labor and Site Restoration: Assist in all manual labor aspects of projects as required, support the restoration of both hard and soft surface work areas.
    • Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance: Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment; assist with routine vehicle and equipment maintenance, including greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs.
    • Operational Proficiency: Operate a horizontal directional drill and a locating unit for the sonde proficiently.
    • Quality Inspection: Inspect work in progress to ensure it meets quality specifications.
    • Chemical Mixing for Boring: Mix water with chemicals for boring, tailored to the specific ground conditions.
    • Site Coordination and Communication: Assist in the coordination for setup of work sites, including managing traffic and pedestrian control, and communicate effectively and efficiently with team members.
    • Winterize Equipment: Properly winterize all equipment to prevent damage.
    • Read and Comprehend Documentation: Read and comprehend construction designs, engineering documents, and other support documents.
    • Supervise and Mentor Junior Staff: Support training for junior staff or apprentices, if applicable.
    • Compliance with Regulations: Ensure job compliance with local, state, and federal, customer, and Telax safety standards, construction procedures, permits, construction designs, etc.
    • Training and Development: Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
    • Perform Other Duties as Assigned.

    • Experience in Construction and Equipment Operation: At least two years of experience in the field, demonstrating hands-on proficiency with construction equipment.

    • Relevant Experience: At least two years of direct experience in telecommunications construction, with specific knowledge and experience operating a directional drill and/or locating on a drill crew. Experience with multiple drill types/sizes is preferred.
