    Position:

    The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring an Air Quality Monitoring Analyst – Analyst 3 for the Pocatello Regional Office.


    Salary Range: $28.49-32.50


    Responsibilities:

    • Install, operate, and maintain the regional air monitoring network; equipment includes real-time and filter-based particulate monitors, gas analyzers (sulfur dioxide and ozone), and a meteorological station.
    • Operate and maintain other special purpose monitors.
    • Assist with other air quality monitors within the network.
    • Ensure all monitoring and ancillary equipment is properly functioning and collecting valid air quality data.
    • Conduct and schedule recommended maintenance and quality assurance auditing events for the sites.
    • Perform periodic maintenance and repairs to equipment; obtain necessary tools and parts to complete tasks.
    • Maintain the monitoring sites (shoveling, mowing, and general maintenance).
    • Respond to equipment updates and outages in a reasonable and timely manner.
    • Coordinate with Stationary Source staff when elevated concentrations of sulfur dioxide on the DEQ monitors indicate upset conditions at the facility.
    • Evaluate regional ambient monitoring instrumentation performance.
    • Maintain all required maintenance, calibration, and recordkeeping logs associated air monitoring standard operating procedures.
    • Assist with routine data edits and quality assurance/quality control efforts.
    • Assist in outreach events in nonattainment areas.
    • Support the airshed management and state implementation activities within the region.
    • Assist in outreach events and/or media contacts.


    Minimum Qualifications:


    Possession of a bachelor's degree in the physical or biological sciences, political science, business or public administration, engineering, or related natural resources management field OR any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a typical four (4) year bachelor's degree. For example: Successful completion of sixty (60) semester hours of study, including twenty four (24) semester hours in a subject required for the specific discipline, is equivalent to two (2) years of undergraduate education; and/or experience performing routine duties in completing multiple tasks such as policy research, data collection, interpretation, analysis and preparation of reports and written documents for at least two (2) years can substitute for one (1) year of college.

    AND

    At least four (4) years' experience managing and implementing, projects or component(s) of programs that are environmental, regulatory, or administrative in nature, where you were required to routinely perform program or project planning; provide technical assistance to staff, special interest groups and the public; and provide policy and/or regulatory interpretation and/or development.

    OR

    Possession of a master's degree in any of the above fields AND at least two (2) years' professional experience managing and implementing or overseeing projects or component(s) of programs that are environmental in nature, where you were required to routinely perform program or project planning; provide technical assistance to staff, special interest groups and the public; and provide policy and/or regulatory interpretation and/or development.


    Required Specialty Minimum Qualification

    DEQ 3111 – Air Monitoring

    Requires good knowledge of the scientific principles of air quality monitoring, environmental monitoring, and/or laboratory analysis that has been gained through possession of a college degree in Meteorology, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Engineering, or closely related field; OR education and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree as described below; AND at least one (1) year experience in one of the following areas: operating ambient air quality monitors, meteorological monitoring equipment, or other air quality testing equipment; evaluation of ambient air monitoring network objectives; operating, calibrating, and performing routine maintenance and minor repair of air quality equipment, ambient air quality monitoring equipment, or meteorological monitoring equipment; processing items such as filters for laboratory analysis; electronically maintaining scientific data files; implementing a quality assurance and quality control program as it applies to ambient air monitoring; plus maintaining an equipment inventory. Environmental laboratory experience can be substituted for experience above. OR Possession of an unrelated degree; AND successful completion of upper-level college coursework in Meteorology, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental, Civil or Chemical Engineering, or closely related field supplemented; AND at least two (2) years experience as described above.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EQUIVALENCY: Successful completion of sixty (60) semester hours of study, including twenty-four (24) credited hours in a subject required for the particular degree, is equivalent to two (2) years of undergraduate education; AND/OR each two (2) years of qualifying work experience as described on the announcement may be equivalent to one (1) year of undergraduate education. Note: Course work requirements are based on curriculum from an accredited college or university.


    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time.
    • Ability to bend and reach for filing purposes.
    • Some periods of heavy reading and typing are required.
    • Some travel may be required.
    • Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds over rough terrain.
    • Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather.
    • Ability to work in extreme hot or cold temperatures both outside and inside.
    • Ability to work on elevated instrument platforms, ladders, etc.
    • Occasional travel required.
